Bonnies Sweep Doubleheader From Dayton in Dramatic Saturday Twinbill

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – A walk-off double in extra innings from Garrett Boldt provided the exclamation mark on a great day for Bonnies baseball at Handler Park as St. Bonaventure swept an Atlantic 10 doubleheader from visiting Dayton.

The Bonnies won both games in one-run fashion, taking the opener by a 6-5 margin before coming through in the 10th for a 4-3 victory to wrap up the nightcap.

Game 1 - St. Bonaventure 6, Dayton 5
A five-run second inning was the difference for the Bonnies as they defeated Dayton in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Jackson DeJohn walked with the bases loaded to start the scoring for the Bonnies in the bottom of the second, then Danny Manion ripped a single up the middle to score two runs.

Senior Matthew Williams capped off the scoring in the second by ripping a double in the right center gap to score DeJohn and Manion.

On the mound the duo of Luke Roggenburk (5.1 IP, six hits, five earned runs) and Liam Devine (3.2 IP, three hits, four strikeouts) were key to the victory.

St. Bonaventure tallied nine hits and were led by Manion, Williams, and Thomas Grilli who each had two apiece.

The Flyers were led at the plate by Matthew Maloney (three hits, three RBIs), Keagan Calero (two hits), and Marcos Pujols (one home run).

Pitcher Eli Majick took the loss for Dayton.

Game 2 – St. Bonaventure 4, Dayton 3 (10 inn.)
Bona rallied in the eighth for a 3-3 tie and Boldt played the hero in the 10th to capture the sweep of the day's action.

The hosts grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth, scoring on a Dayton throwing error and a run-scoring single from Pierce Hendershot.

Dayton surged ahead with two in the seventh, taking the lead, 3-2.

Boldt tied the game with a hit to center, moving Jack Putney from first to third after a walk. Putney would take advantage of another Dayton error to advance home with the tying run.

In the 10th, Thomas Grilli walked with one out before Boldt ripped the second pitch of his at-bat into the right center field gap. Grilli came in all the way from first with a head-first slide at home for the game's winning run.

Jagger Nucci also had two hits for the Bonnies at the plate.

On the mound, freshman Bryce Hediger turned in a strong start with 6.2 innings of three-run ball. The first-year Bonnies starter did not walk a batter and struck out five. Cody Shimp (1.0 IP, one strikeout) and Adam Shaffer (one strikeout) combined for two innings of work, keeping the Flyers off the board.

Ryan O'Connell earned the win with the final five outs, striking out four while not allowing a base runner.
