ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Sophomore Matthew Wrobel scored a pair of goals to lead the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Binghamton on a rainy Monday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Bonnies improve to 2-2 on the year while the Bearcats drop to 0-4.
After a scoreless first 66 minutes in an often pouring rain, Wrobel struck for the first time in the 67th minute when Thomas Yegbor sent a corner kick back post where Wrobel was waiting to head it home for his first goal of the year.
The sophomore forward, who made his season debut last Friday after missing the first two games due to injury, put the game out of reach in the 89th minute with his second score of the contest.
Wrobel powered through the backline of the Binghamton defense and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The Binghamton goalie was able to block Wrobel's first attempt, but Wrobel gathered the rebound and slotted home the goal over both the keeper who had left the net and a Bearcats defender attempting to fill the void.
Freshman Nicolas Pucci made the start in net and earned the first shutout of his young career, making three saves to secure a clean sheet.
Wrobel finished the contest with five shots and four shots on goal while Peter Massaquoi tallied three shots.
The Bonnies head out on the road to take on Little Three rival Canisius Friday night with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
