The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team continues its non-conference schedule with matchups against Little Three rival Canisius and Cleveland State. The Bonnies travel to take on the Golden Griffins Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. before returning home to host the Vikings Monday, Sept. 12 with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
BACK-TO-BACK WINS
- The Bonnies picked up their first two wins of the season over Bucknell last Friday followed by a triumph over Binghamton Monday evening. Bona's took down the Bison with back-to-back goals from Rafael Pereira and Luca Nicastro just a minute and six seconds apart. Against the Bearcats Monday evening, Matthew Wrobel scored twice to give the Bonnies their second straight 2-0 decision.
- Jules Dechert started in net for the Bonnies against Bucknell, making five saves in the shutout effort. Nicolas Pucci made his first career start in goal against Binghamton, stopping three shots en route to a clean sheet.
WELCOME BACK, WROBEL
- After missing the first two games of the season due to injury, sophomore forward Matthew Wrobel made his season debut Friday against the Bison, playing 39 minutes off the bench.
- The 2021 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection truly made his presence known in Monday's matchup with Binghamton. Wrobel was on the receiving end of a pinpoint corner kick from Thomas Yegbor, heading in his first goal of the season in the 67th minute. Wrobel struck again in the 89th minute, putting the game out of reach for the Bearcats.
- Wrobel registered five goals and a pair of assists for 12 points in his as a freshman last season. He netted the game-winning goal in a crucial match on the road at Dayton.
ABOUT CANISIUS
- Canisius enters Friday with a record of 1-2-1 on the season with its lone victory coming over Stonehill, 1-0, last Friday. The Golden Griffins most recently played to a scoreless draw against Dartmouth Monday afternoon. Canisius dropped its first two contests of the season to Cleveland State (4-0) and Duquesne (1-0).
- The Golden Griffs finished last season 1-14-2 overall and 1-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Canisius was picked to finish 10th in the MAAC preseason poll this season.
- The Bonnies are 25-18-7 all-time against Canisius, drawing last season at the Demske Sports Complex. Bona's defeated Canisius in the 2019 season, 3-0, at the Marra Athletics Complex.
- Julius Schoner has scored the lone goal of the season for the Golden Griffins. William Howard has made four starts in net for Canisius, saving 23 shots on the year.
ABOUT CLEVELAND STATE
- Cleveland State enters Monday's contest with a 3-1 record with its only defeat coming to No. 8 Marshall, 3-1, Wednesday evening. The Vikings beat Canisius (4-0), UIC (2-1) and Army West Point (4-2) prior to their matchup with the Thundering Herd.
- The Vikings finished the 2021 season with a 10-8 overall record and were 8-2 in Horizon League play, advancing to the Horizon League championship game before falling to Oakland, 3-1. This season, Cleveland State was picked to finish second in the Horizon League preseason poll, receiving two first place votes.
- The Bonnies and the Vikings have met 15 times prior to Monday's matchup with Cleveland State holding the edge in the series record, 10-4-1. Cleveland State got the better of the Brown and White last season, winning 3-2 in Cleveland.
- Jannis Schmidt has four goals to lead the way offensively for the Vikings while Pablo Kawecki has tallied three goals and an assist on the year. Kyle Folds (two goals) and Bojan Kolevski (two goals) have also scored for Cleveland State this season. In net, Max Kasputis has played all but five minutes, making just four saves through the team's first four games.
