Gottinger Earns 13th Career Shutout, Bonnies Pick Up A-10 Point at UMass in Scoreless Draw

AMHERST, Mass. — The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw at Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. The Bonnies are the first team with any sort of positive result at Rudd Field this season as the Minutewomen had a perfect 5-0 record at home coming into the match.

The Bonnies (3-4-6, 2-2-2 A-10) earned a crucial point in the playoff race over third-place Massachusetts (7-3-4, 4-1-2 A-10) on a sunny fall afternoon. Bonnies junior Chiara Gottinger posted her 13th career shutout, jumping into a tie for third all-time in the Bonnies record books with Lauren Malcolm, '19.

The Pirching am Traubenburg, Austria native made her first save of the game just under two minutes in, stretching out to stop the shot. She made two other stops in what was an evenly matched first half between the Bonnies and Minutewomen.

The Brown and White landed one shot on goal off the foot of senior Alexa Martinos in the fifth minute and had three total shots in the opening frame.

In the second period, the Minutewomen took control of possession, but Gottinger and the Bonnies backline stood tall.

Graduate student Christine Napoli took a shot that trickled wide right to begin the second half for the Bonnies. Sunday's game marked the 75th consecutive start for the Linwood, N.J. native who has started every game of her collegiate career. A staple to the Bonnies lineup for five years, Napoli has played over 6,200 minutes in the Brown and White.

Sophomore Olivia Allen had the best scoring opportunity for St. Bonaventure as she shook off her defender inside the six-yard box but sent her shot sailing over the crossbar in the 64th minute.

Gottinger preserved her shutout by making a pair of saves in the final five minutes of action, including a huge save at point blank range to thwart a 3-on-2 attack from Massachusetts with just over 90 seconds remaining.

The Bonnies return to the Marra Athletics Complex on Thursday as they host Rhode Island for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
