Bonnies Can't Overcome Early Deficit; Fall to Rhode Island, 2-1

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team couldn't overcome an early deficit on Thursday night, falling to Rhode Island 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play at the Marra Athletics Complex.

Rhode Island (3-6-6, 3-1-3 A-10) jumped out to an early lead as Courtney Poon netted a goal in the first minute off a Bonnies turnover in their own defensive third.

The Rams continued their offensive push, doubling their lead in the 24th minute.

A cross that was batted away by Bonaventure keeper Chiara Gottinger, landing at the feet of Rhode Island's Sam Hagerty who sent the rebound in on a low shot past the Bona's defense.

The Bonnies (3-5-6, 2-3-2 A-10) found life offensively after the second Rhode Island goal, taking three shots.

Continuing the attack in the 34th minute, a cross into the 18-yard box found the hand of a Rams defender which awarded the Bonnies their fourth penalty kick of the year.

Sophomore Olivia Allen stepped up to the spot and buried the shot to cut the deficit in half. She is now four-for-four on penalty kicks this season.

In the second half, the Bonnies pressured the Rhode Island defense more, taking nine shots to their five.

In the 85th minute, the Bonnies drew a corner kick and played it into the box. After an initial shot from Sydney Hayward was blocked, the ball found Haylee Smith in front of the net, but she sent her shot just wide.

Both teams took seven shots on target in the match. St. Bonaventure took 17 total shots to URI's 15.

The Bonnies are at home again on Sunday as they host VCU for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
