ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Matthew Keegan's goal with one second remaining on a man-up opportunity in overtime sent visiting Binghamton to victory, and St. Bonaventure to heartbreak, 12-11, in the Bonnies men's lacrosse home opener Saturday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Jake Rosa tallied a team-high five points including four goals on the day for the Bonnies.
St. Bonaventure used a furious rally to force extra time.
Binghamton opened the game with a 7-2 lead with still 1:14 remaining in the first quarter.
After the Bearcats' blitz in the first 15 minutes, and a Bonaventure change in net with
Conan Lynch taking over, the Bonnies began their rally.
Lynch gave the Bonnies a lift, as the hosts kept the Bearcats off the board for the entire second quarter. Offensively, the Bonnies chipped back within three at half following the second goal of the day from
Sean Westley and a strike from
Zach Owens.
Binghamton (2-0) momentarily doubled up the Bonnies once more, 8-4, following a strike from Ethan Insinga to start the second half.
The teams then alternated scores before Rosa, Owens,
Conor Murphy and
Owen Tasse gave Bona's a 5-0 run for a 9-9 tie following Tasse's first collegiate goal 61 seconds into the fourth quarter.
The momentum would be short-lived, though, as Quinn O'Hara scored unassisted with 9:26 to play, followed by another Bearcats goal by Thomas Greenblatt less than a minute later for a two-goal difference.
As time ticked away, it seemed as though the Bonnies' rally had hit empty, before its veteran leaders brought the home crowd to life again.
Senior
Mark Belles scored his first home goal in over a year after missing last season due to injury with 2:39 to play.
Freshman
Quinn Nolan won the ensuing faceoff, with the groundball going to
Caleb Barnard to assure Bona possession.
Sophomore
Drew Kenney then found Rosa who buried his fourth of the day for the equalizer with 2:01 remaining in regulation.
Nolan won the next faceoff as well, and the Bonnies would have two more chances as time wound down – a shot by Rosa with 43 seconds was turned away by Binghamton goalie Connor Winters. A Binghamton penalty gave the Bonnies a 30 second man-up opportunity, but with the clock at 11 seconds,
Will McKay's shot on net was again denied by Winters to force overtime. The stop was Winters' 17th save of the afternoon.
Nolan continued his success at the faceoff dot to start overtime, but a Bonnies shot was blocked in traffic, sending possession the other way. A holding penalty near midfield set the Bearcats up on the man-up and Keegan cashed in as the penalty was set to expire, off an assist from Greenblatt.
Keegan's game-winner was his fourth goal of the day while Greenblatt also recorded a hat trick.
Westley posted four points (2 G, 2 A) as well as two caused turnovers and three groundballs. Nolan won 13 faceoffs on the day while Lynch made eight saves in the net.
St. Bonaventure (0-2) hits the road Tuesday afternoon outside Pittsburgh to play at Robert Morris. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.

- Binghamton held a narrow edge in shots, 42-40, and groundballs, 34-30, but turnovers proved costly for the Bonnies as they finished with 18.
