ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Nikki Oppenheimer's career-high 22 points propelled the St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team to its first-ever victory over VCU, 68-62, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Reilly Center.
Oppenheimer finished the contest 6-for-10 overall and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc while also shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. I'yanna Lops added 15 points and Breauna Ware chipped in 14 points for the Bonnies (6-24, 3-12 A-10).
The Bonnies entered the fourth quarter up two, 51-49, after Ware's 3-pointer at the end of the third.
VCU got the scoring started in the final frame to tie the game at 51-51, but Lops' layup on the following possession pushed the Bonnies back ahead.
Samantha Robinson registered a free throw and a layup with 6:17 remaining in the contest to put the Rams back on top, 54-53.
Ware's and-one with 2:42 on the clock sparked a 7-0 run that put the Bonnies ahead for good.
Oppenheimer and Ware combined to go 6-for-6 from the free throw line over the final 30 seconds to ice the game.
Both teams were on fire to begin Saturday's matchup as the Bonnies and Rams both shot over 40 percent in the first half.
Bona's was 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) from the field while VCU was 12-for-25 (48.0 percent) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Janika Griffith-Wallace led all scorers with 26 points.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday, Feb. 25 in the regular season finale at Richmond. Tip is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Robins Center.
GAME NOTES
- The Bonnies finished the contest shooting 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the field and VCU shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor.
- Saturday marked the program's first-ever victory over VCU, losing 11 straight prior.
- Prior to Saturday's game the Bonnies honored Claire Cody, Tianna Johnson, Kaitlyn Parker, Nikki Oppenheimer and I'yanna Lops for Senior Day.
- At halftime, the Bonnies unveiled a No. 22 banner in the rafters honoring program greats Hilary Waltman and Kathy Lynch.
