ST. BONAVENTURE (1-3) at UMBC (2-0)
Wednesday, March 1 – 6:00 p.m.
Baltimore, MD – UMBC Stadium
The St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse team looks to make it two wins in a row as they had to UMBC Wednesday night, riding the momentum from a weekend victory on home turf vs. VMI. Wednesday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between the Bonnies and Retrievers.
LAST TIME OUT
St. Bonaventure scored its first win of the year, 15-9, vs. VMI at the Marra Athletics Complex last Saturday. The Bonnies opened the game on a 10-1 run and never relinquished control vs. the Keydets. Sean Westley and Jake Rosa combined for 16 points in the win while Mark Belles had three points as well. Also scoring goals for the Bonnies were Patrick Carpenter, Quinn Nolan and Kaden Brennan. Cristofero Cucciuffo also made 14 saves to earn the win in net.
HISTORY-MAKING DAY
It was a historically strong day for the Bonnies in their win over VMI. Sean Westley tied his own school records for both single-game goals (6) and points (9) to power the offense while Quinn Nolan established new school-best game marks for both faceoff wins (19) and groundballs (13). Nolan also scored the quickest goal to begin a game in Bonnies history, taking the opening faceoff and marching down the field for a 1-0 lead just 10 seconds in.
CENTURY MARK FOR ROSA
Senior Jake Rosa continued his outstanding start to the season with 10 points in two games last week. During the VMI win, Rosa surpassed 100 points for his career as he became the second player in Bonnies history to reach the century mark. He joins Westley who reached 100 career points last spring.
Rosa, who leads the team with 18 points this season, enters this week with 101 for his career (59 G, 42 A).
A-10 LEADERS
The Bonnies boast the top two point scorers in the Atlantic 10 so far this season. Jake Rosa leads all A-10 players in points per game (4.5) and ranks 25th nationally thus far. Sean Westley, meanwhile, stands second in the A-10 behind his teammate with 17 points on the season (4.25 per game). By averaging better than a hat trick per contest thus far, Rosa also leads the A-10 in goals per contest while his 48.1 percent shot percentage is second in the league.
STRENGTH AT THE FACEOFF X
After setting the program record for faceoff wins in a game vs. VMI last week, Quinn Nolan is establishing himself as one of the top faceoff specialists in the A-10 early in his freshman campaign. Nolan boasts a winning percentage of over 61 percent so far behind only Saint Joseph's All-American Zach Cole (77 percent) among A-10 players in 2023.
FIRST TIME GOAL SCORERS
The Bonnies picked up the first goal from Kaden Brennan in a SBU uniform in Saturday's win. Brennan scored 20 goals last year at Howard CC. He is one of six players to score their first Bonnies goals so far through four games, joining freshmen Patrick Carpenter and Quinn Nolan (two goals apiece) as well as fellow frosh Owen Tasse and Aidan Smith who have one each, along with redshirt freshman Josh Rosa who scored his first tally at Robert Morris.
ABOUT UMBC
The Retrievers finished 6-7 last year and 3-3 in the America East, beating Binghamton 7-6 in the first round before losing at eventual champion Vermont, 13-11, in the America East title game. UMBC has won its only two games thus far in 2023, 12-7 at Drexel and 16-6 at home vs. Mount St. Mary's last Friday.
UMBC returns 33 letterwinners and eight starters off last year's team. Mateo Brown paces the team in the early going with six goals and seven points, ahead of Kevin Doughty's six tallies. In net, Jayson Tingue has a sparkling 5.65 GAA with a save percentage north of 64 percent. Doughty was named to the America East All-Rookie Team last season while classmate Jordan Galloway was the league's Rookie of the Year last spring.
