Box Score 2 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Gardner-Webb after being held scoreless by Runnin' Bulldogs pitching in both contests Friday afternoon.
Game 1 – Gardner-Webb 11, St. Bonaventure 0 (7 innings)
The Bonnies threatened in the top of the first-inning. Following a
Jack Putney walk,
Jackson DeJohn singled to advance Putney to third, but starting pitcher Bobby Alcock was able to work out of two-out jam.
Gardner-Webb tallied seven runs in the first two innings of the first game of the twinbill with the big blow being a three-run home run Jacob McCaskey.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure an 11-0 victory in game one.
Alcock threw six scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out four. Joe Micelli pitched a scoreless seventh inning out of the bullpen.
At the plate, Nate Anderson drove in three runs while Jacob Marcos and Curtis Robison each finished with two hits for Gardner-Webb.
Freshman
Bobby Finn worked 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, giving up one hit and striking out one for the Bonnies.
Game 2 – Gardner-Webb 8, St. Bonaventure 0
Right-handed starter Casey Young carried Gardner Webb on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout. Young surrendered three hits and struck out eight batters.
Gardner-Webb (8-6) kicked off the scoring in the game with a fielder's choice RBI from Humberto Torres to take a 1-0 lead.
The big inning for the Runnin' Bulldogs came in the bottom of the second, knocking six runs on six hits with an RBI triple and a pair of run-scoring doubles for a 6-0 advantage.
The hosts added a run in the third inning to take an 8-0 lead which would be enough behind the performance of Young in the bump.
Curtis Robison (three RBIs) and Trevor Mattison each recorded two hits to lead Gardner Webb at the plate.
Senior
Tripp Breen was a bright spot for the Bonnies out of the bullpen in game two, pitching 5.2 innings and only allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. His seven strikeouts matched his career-high, which he set at Rhode Island last season.
St. Bonaventure (1-9) was led at the plate by
Christian Szablewski who notched two of the team's three hits in the second game of the twinbill.
The Bonnies will compete in another doubleheader against the Runnin' Bulldogs Saturday beginning at noon. Game one will be a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning contest at 3:30 p.m.
