Bonnies Host Cleveland State in Return Home Saturday

The St. Bonaventure University men's lacrosse team welcomes Cleveland State to town on Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and the game will streamed live through ESPN+.
 
A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
  • Bonnies freshman goalie Cristofero Cucciuffo earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors this week.
  • The first year goalie was outstanding at UMBC last week, making a career-high 18 saves against a Retrievers squad receiving votes in the national Top 20 polls.
  • In five games played this season, Cucciuffo has made 50 saves with a save percentage over 50 percent thus far in his collegiate debut.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
  • The Bonnies have won their last 11 of 13 games at the Marra Athletics Complex, dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Bona's had a nearly two-year winning streak at home snapped at the hands of Binghamton in overtime (12-11) in the home opener this season. Prior to that, Bona's last setback at home was two seasons ago, by one goal, 5-4, to Quinnipiac on March 27, 2021.
  • The Brown and White got back on track against VMI with a 15-9 victory on Saturday, Feb. 25.
 
TEAM LEADERS
  • Senior Jake Rosa leads the team in points with 18 points, scoring 13 goals and tallying five assists.
  • Graduate student Sean Westley is right behind his teammate with 17 points (nine goals, eight assists).
  • Both Rosa and Westley are now members of 100-point club, the only two players in program history to reach that career milestone.
  • Faceoff specialist Quinn Nolan has won 61 faceoffs thus far in his collegiate debut while scooping up a team-high 33 groundballs.
  • Westley and Zack Belter each have four caused turnovers defensively, highest on the team.
 
CONFERENCE RANKINGS
  • Cucciuffo ranks second among Atlantic 10 goalies in save percentage (51%) and third in saves per game (10).
  • Fellow freshman Quinn Nolan currently stands third in the A-10 in groundballs per game (6.60) and faceoff winning percentage (60), which is good for 24th and 26th nationally.
  • Westley is fourth in the conference with 1.60 assists per game; Rosa is third in points per game (3.60) and goals per game (2.60)
 
FAMILIAR FOES
  • Since the inauguration of St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse as a Division I program in 2019, the Bonnies and Vikings have competed against each other three times. The Bonnies lead the series, 2-1.
  • Last season, St. Bonaventure and Cleveland State played a unique home-and-home weekend series March 11, 2022 and March 13, 2022.
  • Austin Blumbergs (four goals, one assist) led the Bonnies to a 12-5 victory in the opener, a home victory. Jake Rosa, Sean Westley and Conor Murphy all had one goal apiece as well in the win.
  • St. Bonaventure outscored the Vikings by a 5-2 margin in the final quarter of play in the second half of the weekend twinbill on the road to secure an 11-10 win. Jake Rosa notched a hat trick in that contest.
  • In all, Blumbergs scored six goals in the home-and-home series.
  • The scheduled matchup during the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID 19 concerns.
 
NATIONAL LEADERS
  • Sean Westley and Jake Rosa are among the career leaders in multiple statistical categories.
  • Westley is 20th among all active Division I players with 60 career assists and 26th in points at 137.
  • Rosa stands 24th in assists per game (1.35) and 36th in points per game (3.26).
 

ABOUT CLEVELAND STATE
  • The Vikings dropped their first two games of the season against nationally-ranked programs, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
  • Cleveland State picked up its first victory of the season at home against Canisius last Saturday, 18-12. Ryan Haigh scored five goals in the win over the Griffs.
  • Reigning ASUN Freshman of the Year and 2023 Preseason All-Conference Team selection Gannon Matthews (eight goals, six assists) leads the team with 14 points, while teammates Ryan Haigh and Brendan Sigurdson each have scored eight goals.
  • In the cage, Cameron Logan has started all three games, making 28 saves.
  • Cleveland State was tabbed to finish seventh in the 2023 ASUN Men's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
UP NEXT
The Bonnies will travel to Buffalo for a matchup with Little Three rival Canisius on Tuesday, March 14. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
