BUFFALO – A dominant second half sent Canisius to a 13-5 victory Tuesday afternoon at the Demeske Sports Complex.
Tuesday's game saw a 3-3 tie with one second remaining in the first half, but a Griffs goal right at the horn set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
From that point, Canisius went on a 9-1 run to completely break the game open.
Turnovers again proved costly as the Bonnies (1-6) were charged with 21 on the day. Canisius (1-6) also peppered 52 shots and won 15 of 21 faceoffs.
Kyle Pepper got the Bonnies on the board a little over 10 minutes in, firing a shot around a defender and under the crossbar for a 1-1 tie that would remain through the end of the first quarter.
The Bonnies would not have to wait nearly as long to break through in the second quarter as Kaden Brennan broke free through the middle of the field untouched for their lone lead of the day with 13:42 left before intermission.
Canisius evened the score with a man-up score that barely bounced past the goal line, and would post a second straight tally on the power play for a 3-2 advantage halfway through the period.
The first half was almost completely even between the two squads.
Jake Emmick used some incredible footwork to dodge a defender, rifling his shot into the back of the net for a 3-3 tie, and it seemed as though the teams would head to the locker rooms deadlocked.
After two strong saves from Cristofero Cucciuffo, though, Canisius converted a third try off the rebound right as the clock hit zero on a goal from Hunter Parucki to go ahead by one at the break.
Canisius ran with that momentum as the second half began, winning the opening faceoff in the third quarter and immediately scoring for the first multiple-goal advantage of the day for either side.
The Griffs scored four straight before Austin Blumbergs cashed in on an opportunity with 5:13 left in the third to pull back within 7-4.
Canisius immediately answered, however, winning the ensuing faceoff and scoring again just 15 seconds after the Blumbergs tally to double up the Bonnies.
From there, the Griffs never relinquished control. Â
Cole Tucker scored his first collegiate goal for the Bonnies during the fourth quarter, assisted by classmate Patrick Carpenter.
Cucciuffo made 13 saves in net.
Parucki posted a game-high five points for the Griffs while goalie Tommy Kunz turned away 14 shots on goal.
The Bonnies are back in action next Tuesday, March 21 at Syracuse. Faceoff at the JMA Wireless Dome is slated for 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
