YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University softball team split a midweek doubleheader on the road at Youngstown State Wednesday afternoon.
The Bonnies dropped game one, 8-0, but regrouped for a 4-2 victory in game two.
Game 1 – Youngstown State 8, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 innings)
The Penguins jumped ahead early with two runs in the bottom of the first following a single and a Bonaventure error.
YSU opened the game up in the bottom of the second, plating four runs on a single, double and wild pitch, extending its lead to 6-0.
The Bonnies looked to get on the board in the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles from Emily Piergustavo and Kennedy Haberl, but the Penguins were able to navigate out of the jam.
Youngstown State scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth by way of a single and a wild pitch to close out the game.
Emily Phelan got the start in game one. Elizabeth Lis tossed the final 3.1 innings, striking out a career-high five batters.
Haberl finished the contest with a pair of singles.
Game 2 – St. Bonaventure 4, Youngstown State 2
The Bonnies (6-16) were able to get on the board first in the top of the second when Reanna Perkins scored Kennedy Haberl on an RBI groundout.
Juanita Wolak tripled to lead off the top of the fifth inning and scored two batters later after Abby Suhr reached on a fielding error. Suhr came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Elyse Graham. Abby Farber capped off the inning with a run-scoring single to left, plating pinch runner Olivia Whitecar to make it a 4-0 lead.
The Penguins (14-15) pulled one back on an error in the bottom of the fifth, cutting their deficit to 4-1.
YSU made it a 4-2 game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to right-center field.
Phelan went the distance in game two, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run. The Penguins put the tying run on base in the seventh, but Phelan was able to shut the door.
Suhr and Farber finished with two hits apiece while Piergustavo added a single.
The Bonnies return home to Joyce Field Friday and Saturday for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Loyola Chicago.
