Manion's Historic Day Keys Doubleheader Split at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Danny Manion's career day of five hits, two homers, and seven RBIs at the plate propelled the St. Bonaventure University baseball team to their first victory of the season, 17-8, over New Mexico in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Game one of the twinbill was one of the best all-around offensive performances in recent memory for the Bonnies as they registered 20 hits in the contest.

New Mexico responded in game two of the doubleheader, however, claiming a 20-3 victory in the nightcap.

Including game two, Manion finished with a team-high six hits Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 – St. Bonaventure 17, New Mexico 8
The Bonnies took control of the game from the get-go, striking for five runs on five hits in the top of the second inning.

Manion began the scoring for the Bonnies with a two-run home run over the left field fence for his first round-tripper of the season.

Following Manion's blast, Artin Biageyian and Jake Biscailuz recorded back-to-back singles and came around to score following a ground-rule double off the bat of Jayce Tharnish and sacrifice fly from Adam Rankie.

Senior Jack Putney capped off the five-run inning with an RBI double to plate Tharnish.

St. Bonaventure was not done as in the next inning the team scored four runs with the big blow once again coming off the bat of Manion. He smacked another no-doubt two-run home run, giving the Bradford, Pa. native the second multi-home run game of his career with the previous two-homer effort coming on May 21, 2021 against Fordham.

Biscailuz and Tharnish notched back-to-back singles and were able to score on an error by the Lobos' second basemen to take a 9-0 lead.

Manion continued to swing a hot bat, recording his fifth RBI of the day on a single through the right side in a two-run fourth inning to give the Bonnies an 11-0 lead.

New Mexico plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 11-5.

Following a Jackson DeJohn single, Manion ended his impressive afternoon at the plate by hitting a run-scoring double off the wall in center to knock in DeJohn, just missing his third big fly of the game.

Biageyian hit his second collegiate home run, and first at the Division I level, off the left field foul pole to give St. Bonaventure a 13-7 advantage.

The Bonnies tacked on four runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure a 17-7 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

Manion tallied a career-high seven RBIs as part of a 5-for-5 game at the plate. His performance marks the most hits in a single game by a Bonnie since 2019 when Kevin Higgins registered five hits in an 18-6 triumph over Penn State. It stands as the most RBIs in a game by a St. Bonaventure batter since 2017 when Bona alum and current pro product Bubba Hollins drove in eight runs during a 17-4 win at Davidson. Hollins' 2017 effort stands as the best RBI day by a Bonnies player in a single game over the past three decades. David Vaccaro also had a seven RBI game vs. George Mason during the 2016 season.

Biscailuz, DeJohn and Putney (one RBI) each tallied three hits and an RBI apiece for the Bonnies.

On the mound, Ryan O'Connell (2.1 IP/two earned runs) picked up the win St. Bonaventure after relieving starting pitcher Gabe Watts in the fourth inning, who allowed five earned runs with three strikeouts. Graduate student Liam Devine threw 3.1 innings, striking out four to earn his first save of the season.

At the plate, the Lobos were led by Lenny Junior Ashby (four RBIs) and Dylan Ditzenberger who each had two hits.

St. Bonaventure outhit New Mexico in game one Saturday afternoon, 20-8. The offense delivered 15 or more hits in a single game for the first time since the 2020 season against Mount St. Mary's (16 hits).

Bona's offensive blitz in game one represented the best production at the plate for the Bonnies in a single game since an April 3, 2019 win at Penn State when the Brown and White struck for 18 runs on 21 hits.

With the win, first-year head coach Jason Rathbun picks up his first Division I victory after posting 556 wins in the past 17 seasons at Herkimer Community College.

Game 2 – New Mexico 20, St. Bonaventure 3
The Bonnies picked up right where they left off in game two of the doubleheader, notching two first inning runs off a Thomas Grilli fielder's choice RBI and a groundout RBI from Pierce Hendershot.

New Mexico (8-2) answered with an 11-run bottom half of the opening inning, though, to take control with the big blow being a bases clearing double from Chase Weissenborn.

The Lobos would score every inning except for the fifth inning of the second contest of the day.

For St. Bonaventure (1-6), Christian Szablewski roped his first home run of the season over the left field wall, while Jackson DeJohn and Jayce Tharnish each delivered a hit.

Starting pitcher Jaren Jackson threw six innings, giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts for the Lobos, which entered the weekend as the top hitting club in the country over the first two weeks of the season.

Braydon Runion led the Lobos with four hits (two doubles) and five RBIs, while Dylan Ditzenberger tallied three hits and three runs batted in.

The two teams complete the four-game series Sunday with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. MT/2:00 p.m. ET
