FAIRFAX, Va. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team grabbed the final game of the series from George Mason in dramatic fashion by a score of 4-3 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon in Fairfax.
Â
A clutch two-out RBI double from
Thomas Grilli and RBI single from
Evan Dieter would help lead the Bonnies to their third conference victory of the season.
Â
George Mason took two of three games from St. Bonaventure this weekend, notching a walk-off win in the first game of a doubleheader Friday and a 17-5 victory in game two.
Â
Game 3 – St. Bonaventure 4, George Mason 3 (11 inn.)
For the second game of the weekend, the Bonnies and Patriots went to extra innings as neither team could break the 2-2 tie through nine innings Sunday afternoon after a day off for rain on Saturday.
Â
Both teams went scoreless in the first extra frame, but St. Bonaventure struck in the top of the 11th when
Thomas Grilli hit a two-out, two-strike double off of George Mason reliever Nick Lamere to score
Jack Putney and give the Bonnies a 3-2 advantage.
Â
The Bonnies weren't done there as
Evan Dieter added an insurance run to go into the bottom half of the inning with a 4-2 lead.
That insurance would prove vital in the home half of the 11th.
Â
Reliever
Bryce Hediger got the first two outs of the bottom of the 11th, but ran into trouble as the Patriots scored a run with two outs to cut their deficit to one run. However, closer
Liam Devine came in from the bullpen and picked up the final out of the game with the tying run in scoring position to earn his fifth save of the season and secure the 4-3 victory.
Â
Hediger picked up his first win of the year in relief for the Bonnies by picking up five outs out of the bullpen.
Bona's starter
Luke Roggenburk spun a gem on the mound for the Bonnies, throwing a career-high nine innings with four strikeouts and no walks while only allowing two runs. It was the longest outing by a Bonnies pitcher since Casey Vincent pitched a complete game shutout at Dayton in 2018.
Â
Following a
Jackson DeJohn double in the top of the fourth, Putney put the Bonnies on the board first by plating DeJohn with an RBI single.
Â
Putney would get to third thanks to a double off the bat of Grilli, but the Patriots' starter worked his way out of the inning only allowing one run.
Â
George Mason knotted the game at one apiece on a sac fly from Reece Woody.
Â
The Bonnies would retake the lead with a two-out RBI single from
Evan Dieter in the top of the sixth.
Â
However, the Patriots once again responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the score at two as Connor Dykstra hit a solo home run.
Â
For Roggenburk, it was the second start in a row in which he has not given up a free pass.
Â
At the plate, George Mason was led by James Quinn-Irons who had three hits.
Â
Grilli and Putney each finished with three hits, while Dieter had a team-high two RBIs.
Â
Redshirt junior
Adam Rankie had his hitting streak snapped at 17 games, the longest hit streak for a Bonnie since Jason Radwan tallied a hit in 17 straight games in 2013. The last Bonnies hitting streak that was longer came from Jesse Bosnik, who hit safely in 19 straight games during the 2010 season.
Â
Game 1 – George Mason 7, St. Bonaventure 6 (11 inn.)
George Mason walked it off in the bottom of the 11
th with a sac fly off the bat of pinch hitter Ryan Archibald to take game one of Friday's doubleheader, 7-6.
Â
The Patriots got the first two hitters on base in the 11
th and capitalized off a fielding error by the Bonnies to score the game-winner.
The Bonnies took a lead to the ninth, but could not hold on as George Mason plated a run to force extra innings in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
A five-run fifth inning sparked the Bonnies in game one Friday afternoon.
Â
George Mason put together a five-run inning of their own in the bottom of the fourth, but the St. Bonaventure immediately answered in the top of the fifth.
Â
The inning began with two walks and a single to load the bases full of the Bonnies.
Kyle Caccamise drove in the first run of the game for St. Bonaventure with an RBI single.
Â
Rankie had the big blow in the inning with a bases-clearing double to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
Â
The Bonnies ended their half of the fifth with an RBI safety squeeze from
Mark Darakjy to knot the game at five apiece.
Â
Following an
Artin Biageyian two-out double, Caccamise recorded his second RBI single of the game to give the Bonnies a 6-5 lead.
Â
Starter
Tripp Breen settled in, throwing two scoreless innings to finish his outing.
Â
Breen pitched six innings, striking out four on six hits and allowed all of four of his runs in the fourth inning.
Â
Graduate reliever
Liam Devine came in for Breen and threw two scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
The Patriots were led at the plate by Derek Wood who knocked in two runs. Christian Mracna threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win on the mound.

Â
Game 2 – George Mason 17, St. Bonaventure 5
Rankie kicked off the scoring for the Bonnies with a solo home run for his second long ball of the season, which extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

Â
Dieter led the Bonnies at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Â
Out of the bullpen,
