ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped a heartbreaker to George Mason, 3-2, in the series finale Saturday at Joyce Field.
The Bonnies and Patriots were locked in a pitcher's duel heading into the bottom of the fifth.
With runners on first and second with two outs, Brooke Bobbey rocketed a triple to left-center field, clearing the bases and giving the Bonnies a 2-0 advantage late in the contest.
George Mason (22-15, 8-4 A-10), however, did not go away quietly.
The Patriots advanced runners to second and third with one out in the top of the seventh before Haley Taormina singled through the left side, scoring both while advancing to second on the throw home, tying the game at 2-2.
The visitors wasted no time driving home the winning run as Nicole Bechtel singled home Taormina during the next at-bat.
Mason starter Aly Rayle shutdown the Bonnies (8-20, 3-9 A-10) in the bottom of the seventh, earning the series win for the Patriots.
Emily Phelan struck out eight in the complete game effort for the Brown and White, tossing 141 pitches in the contest.
Abby Suhr also collected a single for the Bonnies.
The Bonnies are back in action at Joyce Field Tuesday, April 11 when they host Little Three rival Canisius. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
