ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure University men's and women's swimming head coach Mike Smiechowski has named Will Canny as the team's new diving coach for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
"Will brings energy and enthusiasm that was palpable during the interview process," Smiechowski said. "He is excited to develop and build our diving program. His experience as a high-level diver at the mid-major level as well as his passion for the sport will be a great asset to our program."
Canny joins the Bonnies coaching staff after previously serving as the head diving coach at the Swim Club in in Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland where he instructed 30 athletes.
Prior to coaching, Canny was a standout performer on the boards as a student-athlete for four seasons at Towson University where he was the 2019 Colonial Athletic Conference Diver of the Year. Also in 2019, Canny earned CAA Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet after winning the 3-meter dive and finishing second in the 1-meter at conference championships.
In all, Canny was an eight-time CAA diving finalist, seven-time CAA diving medalist and a two-time NCAA Zone qualifier. He served as the team captain for the 2020-21 season.
Canny graduated from Towson with a bachelor's degree in sports management and a minor in business administration in May 2021.
