The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team returns home to host Little Three rival Canisius and Atlantic 10 foe George Mason at the Marra Athletics Complex this week. The Bonnies and Golden Griffins are set to square off Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m. while the Patriots come to town Saturday, Sept. 23 with kickoff slated for 6:00 p.m.
RIVALRY WIN
The Bonnies took down Little Three rival Niagara last Wednesday on home turf, 3-1, behind a pair of goals from Kenzo Brito and Andres Javitt.
The Bonnies broke through on the scoreboard first when Brito found the back of the net in the ninth minute. A Niagara free kick score had the contest tied, 1-1, heading into halftime.
Javitt was able to break the deadlock in the 56th minute, netting his third goal of the season. Brito tacked on an insurance goal for the Bonnies in the 63rd minute, marking his second score of the game and season.
Nicolas Pucci was in net for the Bonnies, making a pair of saves in the victory.
In the Bonnies' second contest of the week on the road at Fordham, the Rams bested Bona, 3-0.
TEAM LEADERS
Through six games, junior Andres Javitt leads the Bonnies with seven points on three goals and one assist. Brito and Rashid Aroza have each registered two goals. Rafael Pereira is second on the team with two assists, adding a goal to his record for four points. Umechi Akuazaoku, Mo Tall and Bo Drath have also tallied a point for SBU this season.
CANISIUS NOTES
The Golden Griffins enter Wednesday's matchup with a 1-5-1 overall record and are 0-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play after falling to Manhattan, 4-0, Saturday afternoon. Canisius' lone win of the season came Sept. 4, taking down Central Connecticut State, 4-2. Canisius was picked to finish 11th in the MAAC preseason poll.
Ely Sidibe (two goals, two assists) and Michael Switala (three goals) lead the way offensively for the Golden Griffins with six points apiece. Daniel Longo has also scored a pair of goals for Canisius
In net, Jack Petrie and Spencer Catalano have split time this season. Petrie has made five starts to go with 31 saves while Catalano has started two contests, making 11 saves.
Bonnies head coach Kwame Oduro is no stranger to Canisius as he spent four seasons as the Golden Griffins assistant coach.
ABOUT GEORGE MASON
George Mason comes into Saturday's match 1-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in Atlantic 10 play, dropping its conference opener to Davidson, 2-0. Prior to their contest against the Wildcats, the Patriots picked up their first win of the season Sept. 11 over Navy, 4-0. The Patriots were picked to finish 13th in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
Souley Diouf leads the Patriots with three goal and one assist for seven points while Luis Maestre leads the way with five assists. Henry Wachsman has started all six games and is third in points with four on two goals.
In net, Jaume Salvado has started all six games, stopping 18 shots and allowing nine goals.
UP NEXT
The Bonnies head back out on the road for a matchup with Robert Morris Tuesday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
