Bonnies Complete Little Three Sweep With 4-0 Shutout of Canisius

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – It was a memorable night at the Marra Athletics Complex for the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team, defeating Little Three rival Canisius, 4-0, Wednesday evening.

The Bonnies (3-3-1) got goals from Umechi Akuazaoku, Andres Javitt, Kenzo Brito and Daniel Helle en route to the shutout victory.

Helle and the Bonnies made their offensive presence known early on as the freshman forward had near misses on goal in the 15th, 23rd and 28th minutes.

The Bonnies were able to breakthrough on the scoreboard in the 36th minute when Marius Dahl fired a shot on net that the Canisius goalkeeper could not handle cleanly and Akuazaoku pounced on the rebound just two minutes after being subbed on and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

After the break in the 52nd minute, Kenzo Brito found Rafael Pereira on a build-up play and Pereira found Javitt lurking in the box. Javitt released a composed shot on net, tallying his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Bona's did not take its foot off the gas, earning a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Brito stepped up to the spot and slotted home the goal, extending the St. Bonaventure lead to 3-0.

Helle and fellow freshman Alessandro Ferrin linked up in the 65th minute and Helle sailed a shot past the goalkeeper, giving the Bonnies the 4-0 victory.

Jules Dechert pitched a shutout in net, making five saves in the contest.

The Bonnies finished the night +12 in shots, outshooting the Golden Griffins (1-6-1), 20-9.

Wednesday's victory marks the largest shutout for the Bonnies in 20 years and was the first time scoring four goals in a game since Oct. 12, 2021 when SBU defeated Army, 4-2.

Also with the victory Wednesday night, it is the first time the Bonnies have defeated both Canisius and Niagara in the same season since 2010. Bona's knocked off Niagara last week at home as well.

The Bonnies return to Atlantic 10 play Saturday, Oct. 23 when they host George Mason. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.
