MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon. The Bonnies took a quick 2-0 lead in the first half before the Colonials would rally in the second period.
RMU opened with a scoring opportunity in the fifth minute, but
Chiara Gottinger made a tremendous diving save to keep the game scoreless.
Just over four minutes later, sophomore
Olivia Allen tried to break through two defenders in the box before being taken down and was awarded a penalty kick. Allen buried her second PK and third goal of the year to give the Bonnies an early 1-0 lead.
Junior
Sydney Hayward doubled the Bonnies' lead on her second goal in as many games off a set piece from
Hannah Walker.
The defender settled the ball as the RMU keeper came off her line and sent it into the top right corner. Hayward has become an essential part of the Bonnies backline this season starting and playing in all 90 minutes of the Brown and White's six games while also scoring her first two collegiate goals.
Hayward was booked with a yellow card in the 20
th minute as the referee called a dangerous play in the box giving the Colonials a PK opportunity. Hayashi Kaoru couldn't convert, however, sending a low shot just outside of the left post.
St. Bonaventure (1-1-4) dominated possession in the first half despite taking just three shots. The Bonnies went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
The second frame played out differently for the Bonnies as the Colonials' Lidia Nduka sent a shot off the left frame just a minute in.
RMU's Renae Mohrbacher cut the Bonaventure lead in half in the 53
rd minute as she sailed one into the top right corner just out of Gottinger's reach. Mohrbacher struck again just over two minutes later to knot things at two.
A couple late opportunities for the Bonnies couldn't be converted as
Amber Achladis and
Kenzie Tarmino sent shots in just off frame in the final minutes.
The Colonials outshot the Bonnies 12-4 in the second half and 15-7 for the day. RMU had the advantage on corners as well, taking 10 on the day
Gottinger made three saves while seven different Bonnies recorded shots.
The Bonnies were able to become the first team to earn any type of positive result against a Robert Morris squad which had won its first five games and now stands at 5-0-1.
St. Bonaventure concludes non-conference play on Wednesday as the team travels to Buffalo for a 6:00 p.m. matchup with Canisius.
