Box Score

BUFFALO – Canisius started strong and broke through in the second half following a scoreless opening 45 minutes, taking a 2-0 win over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team Wednesday night.

Canisius controlled the pace of play during the first half with multiple strong scoring chances.

In the 19th minute, a Griffs header bounced off the post and the rebound nearly ricocheted in, but Bridget Kennedy was able to clear the loose ball just before it crossed the goal line.

Chiara Gottinger kept things scoreless in the 36th minute with two sprawling stops.

The Griffs would break through five minutes into the second half, however, as a failed goal kick resulted in Canisius stealing possession. Emma Oliphant then found Nicki Silverman who went far post above a leaping stop attempt by Gottinger for the first goal.

St. Bonaventure (1-2-4) pushed forward more often during the second half, but struggled to find true scoring opportunities.

Canisius (2-1-3) would put the game away in the 78th minute as Oliphant again created a scoring play, this time finding the foot of Maggie Cregan who deposited the second goal of the game into the back of the net.

Gottinger made eight saves in net for the Bonnies.

Wednesday's game wrapped up non-conference play for the Bonnies. They're now off until Thursday, Sept. 14 when they welcome Dayton to the Marra Athletics Complex to open up Atlantic 10 action. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
