PHILADELPHIA – Andres Javitt's first half goal sent the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory on the road at La Salle Saturday afternoon.
The Bonnies (5-5-3, 2-1-2 A-10) moved back to .500 on the season after scoring in the 25th minute and never relinquishing the lead.
Mo Tall made a run down the right side of the field and crossed the ball into the box where Kenzo Brito headed a chance on net. A La Salle defender deflected his shot and Javitt was there to punch home the rebound chance, registering his team-best fourth goal of the season.
Bona's had back-to-back chances in the 28th minute to extend the lead from Mattia Ferretti and Brito. Their shots, however, were saved by La Salle goalkeeper Randy Burkhardt.
Opening the second half on the attack, Daniel Helle had a look on net in the 50th minute but Burkhardt turned away his chance.
St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Nicolas Pucci was tested in the 71st minute when Giammarco Rodio had a shot on goal and the junior was there to punch away the chance.
The Bonnies backline held the Explorers (4-6-3, 2-2-1 A-10) to just four shots on goal in the contest while the defense and Pucci posted their second straight conference shutout. Bona's did not allow a goal on its two-game road trip to George Washington and La Salle this week.
Brito paced the Bonnies with five shots while Javitt finished with three chances. Gabriel Addo and Umechi Akuazaoku also registered two shots each.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH KWAME ODURO
"The coolest thing I witnessed today was St. Bonaventure fans cheering us on in the stands. It gave us the extra push for the final moments of that game."
"We are improving defensively each game. That is three clean sheets in five Atlantic 10 games. There is still room to improve, but we are happy to be coming back to campus with four points this week."
