Women's Soccer Falls To Fordham

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team was unable to a second consecutive Atlantic 10 victory as the Bonnies fell to Fordham Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex. The visitors captured a 4-0 victory, scoring twice in each half.

St. Bonaventure recorded the first shot of the game 18 seconds in off the foot of Sydney Hayward. The senior sent her shot over the crossbar.

Senior goalkeeper Chiara Gottinger made a diving save in the fifth minute to keep the game scoreless early on.

Fordham (10-4-3, 5-2-2 A-10) took the lead in the 16th minute as the Rams converted on a set-piece opportunity. Lena Johnsen served a free kick into the box for Abby Borchers who got a head on the ball and directed it into the net.

The Rams doubled their lead two minutes later. Julia Acost was credited with the goal.

Freshman Torrie Grant-Clavijo had the last scoring opportunity of the half for the Bonnies as she sent a high-flying shot into the box that was saved by the Rams keeper.

After the intermission, junior keeper Jael Schubert entered for St. Bonaventure to replace Gottinger. Gottinger finished with two saves.

The Bonnies fought off six shots from the Rams in the beginning of the half, before conceding a third goal in the 65th minute. Borchers was credited for her second goal of the day.

Ella Yartym, who made her first collegiate start for the Bonnies, took a look at net in the 79th minute but had her chance turned away by the Rams defense.

Fordham tacked on a fourth goal in the 88th minute from Liina Tervo.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH DONNY GEORGE
"Today's game against Fordham was always going to be a challenge. They're a strong team having a great season. Our goal going in was to be resilient and tough to break down. Looking at the goals we conceded, I believe we could have done more individually to prevent them from capitalizing."

"Without going into too much detail, the last few days have been tough for this group, and that showed today. We now have several days to prepare for Thursday's matchup against Richmond, and the team will work hard this week to bounce back."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies play their final home game of the season Thursday as they host Richmond. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
