WASHINGTON, D.C. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team battled George Washington to a 0-0 tie Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital.
The Bonnies (4-5-3, 1-1-2 A-10) outshot the Revolutionaries (2-8-2, 0-3-1 A-10) 18-8 overall and were 10-1 in shots on goal, but could not break through to earn three points toward the conference standings and instead will settle for one.
The Bonnies generated a trio of scoring chances in the first half, starting with Mattia Ferretti in the 10th minute, but George Washington goalkeeper Tom Macauley saved his shot.
Rashid Aroza looked to score in the 34th minute, however, Macauley was there to make the save.Â
Neshawn Sutherland found himself one-on-one with Macauley in the 38th minute, but his shot went straight at Macauley who made the save to send the teams into halftime without a tally.
Dean Mercer had a chance on net in the 54th minute, standing over a set piece just outside the box. His shot, however, was hauled in by the goalkeeper.Â
Aroza had a second chance to score in the 55th minute but could not find the back of the net.Â
Kenzo Brito had back-to-back shots saved by Macauley in the 56th and 57th minute, leaving the Bonnies still searching for the winning goal.
Andres Javitt looked to break the scoreless contest in the 81st minute, but could not get enough on his shot as it rolled to the goalkeeper.Â
Nicolas Pucci made his only save of the match in the 82nd minute, preserving the shutout.
Bona's best scoring chance of the second half came in the 87th minute as Brito played a low ball across the box in front for Keegan Dawson. The senior's shot, however, went high of the net and over the crossbar.
Brito finished with a team-high four shots while Aroza registered three to lead the Bonnies offensively. Callum Shillington and Javitt tallied two shots apiece.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH KWAME ODURO
"We defended well today and earned a clean sheet. In the final third, we lacked some composure, but credit to George Washington who made the game difficult. We will learn and improve, and we look forward to Saturday's game at La Salle."
