Bonnies Come Up Short at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Dani Haskell's 24 points were not enough as the St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Youngstown State, 60-52, Tuesday evening.

Haskell finished the night 8-for-16 from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Isabellah Middleton also finished in double figures for the Bonnies with 15 points while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.

The Bonnies were able to pull with five, 55-50, after a Middleton layup with 3:19 showing on the clock, forcing a Youngstown State timeout.

That would be as close as the Bonnies would get as the Penguins held the Brown and White without a field goal over the final three minutes.

The Bonnies fell behind early in the first period, shooting just 23.5 percent percent from the field.

Haskell tallied all 10 first quarter points for the Brown and White as they clawed back to within seven at the end of the quarter, 17-10.

The Penguins grew their lead back to 10 after a Malia Magestro layup with 3:12 remaining in the half.

Bona got tallies from Haskell, Isabellah Middleton and Lena Walz to pull back within five at the break, heading into the locker room trailing 30-25.

Youngstown State started the second half with a 7-2 spurt to push its lead back to nine, 37-27.

Haskell brought the Bonnies within six late in the third, but the Penguins responded a layup and pair of free throws to extend the lead back to 10, 47-37.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY
"I thought they were physical. I thought they did a good job defensively. I really thought we just took some shots outside of our comfort zone. I thought we pressed early with some shots taken; a lot of contested, deep shots that we didn't need to take. So while I think it was some of their defense, I also think the atmosphere got to us."

"The last quarter was the only quarter we really attacked, which is a big part of our offense. They did a good job of forcing us sideways and then taking away our first pass."

GAME NOTES

  • Lena Walz and Aurore Eyango made their St. Bonaventure debuts. Walz tallied two points in 15 minutes while Eyango grabbed three rebounds.
  • The Bonnies finished the contest shooting 28.1 percent (16-for-57) from the field while the Penguins shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from the floor.

UP NEXT
The Bonnies remain on the road as they travel to take on Bowling Green Saturday, Nov. 16. Tip is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Ohio.
