Bonnies Tripped Up by Loyola Chicago in A-10 Opener

CHICAGO – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Loyola Chicago, 57-40, on the road in Sunday's Atlantic 10 opener.

Dani Haskell paced the Bonnies with 14 points while Zoe Shaw chipped in 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Caitlin Frost added six points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

It was a cold shooting first quarter for both teams as they were deadlocked at 7-7 after the first period.

A Haskell three with 56 seconds showing on the clock in the first ended a six-minute scoring drought from both teams and tied the game late in the first.

Loyola Chicago missed its final 11 field goal attempts of the opening period, but began the second quarter with a quick 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead and held the Bonnies without a basket for nearly the first four minutes of the quarter.

The Ramblers extended their lead to 18-11 in the period before the Bonnies ended the first half with a 6-0 spurt to pull within one at the break, 18-17.

Loyola took a 25-19 edge early in the third before Haskell and Macy Smith traded baskets with the hosts, making it a 27-23 contest.

A layup from Nadechka Laccen opened the fourth to make it a 29-25 game before back-to-back baskets from the Ramblers extended their lead to eight.

The hosts used a 5-0 run early in the fourth to take a 12-point lead.

Laccen got the Bonnies back within single digits with an and-one.

That is as close as the Bonnies would get, however, as Naelle Bernand made back-to-back threes for the hosts, putting the game out of reach.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the contest shooting 34.0 percent (17-for-50) from the field while Loyola shot 36.9 percent (24-for-65) from the floor.
  • The Ramblers won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Brown and White, 41-32.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY
"There were three good quarters defensively, but we shot ourselves in the foot during that time with the turnovers. They played with great urgency in the fourth and we were able to get some scores, but we could not string any stops together. We've got to play better. In the first quarter, we held Loyola to 3-for-17 shooting and we were tied because we had eight turnovers."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies return home to open 2025 when they host Rhode Island Thursday, Jan. 2. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
