ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Duquesne built a 17-point lead early in the second half and withstood a late charge from St. Bonaventure holding on for a 75-69 victory Saturday afternoon in the Reilly Center.
Like in recent comebacks, the Bonnies mounted a rally in the late second half.
Duquesne had its largest lead two minutes into the second period, but the hosts would claw their way back.
Jimmy Clark III, Duquesne's leading scorer on the day to that point, fouled out with 2:10 to go and back-to-back buckets from Mika Adams-Woods made it a six-point game with 1:04 left.
Daryl Banks III stole an in-bounds pass, then drew a foul and converted both at the line for a 65-61 score with 62 seconds remaining.
Free throws from Dae Dae Grant stretched the edge back to six points for Duquesne but a layup on the other end by Chad Venning got it back down to four.
A David Dixon dunk seemed to put the game on ice, but a three from Banks got the deficit down to a possession, 69-66, with 27 seconds to go.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, the Dukes were able to break the press and make their free throws to seal the victory.
Charles Pride led Bona with 22 points and eight rebounds while Adams-Woods added 21 points for the Bonnies (14-9, 5-6 A-10)
The first half brought memories of the first meeting less than three weeks ago in Pittsburgh as the Bonnies were slow out of the gates.
It was back-and-forth early, but the Dukes then went on a 15-2 run over a span of five and a half minutes. During that stretch, the Bonnies went 1-for-10 from the floor and went scoreless for four minutes before Kyrell Luc broke the drought with a layup.
Still, Duquesne took a 36-23 lead to intermission as a dunk from Halil Barre at the shot clock buzzer sent the Dukes into the break with all the momentum.
The first two buckets of the second half went the way of Duquesne but the Bonnies began to chip away until the final minute.
Clark recorded 15 points and eight assists for Duquesne (14-9, 4-6). Fousseyni Drame posted 16 points and 14 boards off the bench for the Dukes.
