RICHMOND, Va. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team dropped a 54-40 decision on the road at VCU Saturday afternoon.
Dani Haskell finished with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including four threes. Payton Fields tallied seven points and five rebounds while Tamar voor de Poort played a career-high 18 minutes off the bench.
The Bonnies pulled ahead early on, 11-7, but a VCU layup on the other end quickly pulled the hosts back within a basket.
Haskell started the contest a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, including a trio of threes to push the Bonnies ahead, 17-15, after the first quarter.
VCU's defense clamped down in the second period, holding the Bonnies to just one made field goal in the quarter.
The Rams (21-3, 10-2 A-10) grabbed their biggest lead of the first half, 24-17, as part of a 9-0 spurt spanning over seven minutes.
Tamar voor de Poort was able to end the Bonnies drought with her first basket of the contest with 2:13 remaining in the first half, pulling the Brown and White within five.
A layup from Mary-Anna Asare with 37 seconds on the clock pushed the VCU lead back to seven, 26-19, heading into halftime.
In the second half, Payton Fields cut the deficit to single digits, 34-25, with just over five minutes left in the third, but VCU was quick to respond with a 3-pointer a few possessions later to retake a double-digit advantage.
VCU maintained control of the contest in the fourth, growing its lead to as many as 16 in the quarter and earning the victory.
The Bonnies (4-19, 1-11 A-10) return home to begin a three-game homestand Wednesday, Feb. 14 when they host Duquesne. Tip is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
