CHARLESTON, S.C. – St. Bonaventure's bats roared to life as the Bonnies registered a convincing 22-10 victory at The Citadel Saturday afternoon.
Bona's offensive numbers were gaudy across the board – the Bonnies racked up 20 hits on the day, including nine for extra bases. Ten different SBU players collected hits with four having three or more – David Marshall Jr. and Robert Mannino each had four while Adam Rankie and Jack Putney collected three apiece.
Marshall and Putney both drove in six runs with Putney going yard twice.
The Citadel (1-1) scored two runs early and led 4-1 after two frames.
St. Bonaventure (1-1) changed things with a six-run third.
Paul Vossen got aboard with a bunt single, then scored on a triple to center from Marshall. Rankie doubled home Marshall and would score an out later following another two-base hit by Jackson DeJohn. Mannino cracked the third double of the inning to bring home another and Kyle Caccamise finished the rally with a sac fly.
Citadel got a run back in the home half of the third, then, after the Bonnies scored a run on a DeJohn sac fly in the fourth, tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth on a long home run by Anthony Hausner.
While it looked like the hosts had all the momentum heading for the seventh after their rally, the Bonnies quickly got back on top.
Bona plated nine runs on six hits in the seventh inning to break the game wide open.
Mannino gave the Bonnies a 9-8 lead with a run-scoring hit through the left side and would later score on an infield hit by Caccamise. Vossen then drew a bases loaded walk for a two-run lead before Marshall had the game's defining moment with a bases-clearing double down the right field line.
Putney gave the Bonnies breathing room with his first of two three-run homers – his second coming an inning later as the visitors poured it on.
Kade Walker earned the win in relief, working 3.1 innings of three-run ball with three strikeouts out of the Bona bullpen. Michael Salina started and struck out two in 3.2 innings after getting the start. Luke Roggenburk closed the game with the final two frames.
The teams are set for the series rubber match Sunday at noon.
GAME NOTES
- Mannino went 4-for-4 in his first start with the Bonnies, drawing a walk and finishing with three RBIs.

- The six RBIs from Marshall and Putney tie for seventh in Bona's single-game history.
