Women's Lacrosse Scores First Power 5 Win at California

BERKELEY, Calif. —The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team secured their first-ever win over a Power 5 opponent on Thursday afternoon when the Bonnies took down California, 10-8. Bona's split their two-game spring break trip to California and improved to 2-3 on the year.

Seven different players scored in Thursday's win and graduate student Ashley Herrick took care of business in the cage for Bona's with 11 saves. Abby Hiltz's hat trick led the offense.

Starting early on in the first quarter, Fiona McGovern found a cutting Hiltz to get the Bonnies on the board.

Cal (1-4) evened the score at the 7:36 mark before senior Riley Schott drove home her first score of the year for the Brown and White as time expired in the first quarter.

An evenly-matched second quarter saw both squads net a pair of goals. Cal scored the first two of the period for their only lead of the game; however, the Bonnies regained momentum heading into halftime.

Rylee Gonzalez and Kassi Hogan were the third and fourth goal scorers for the Bonnies.

St. Bonaventure had a 4-3 advantage after two quarters despite Cal leading 8-0 on the draw in the first half.

Brooke Piper was the fifth Bonnies player to score on the day, taking a pass from Tori Nascimento and slotting it past the Cal goalkeeper.

Piper scored again off a free position shot as she sailed the ball into the back of the net barely coming off her spot.

A quick stop and score at the end of the third allowed Abby Hiltz to score her second of the day off the pass from Grace Hollenbeck

St. Bonaventure extended their lead out to four to open the final frame. Olivia Peeler won the opening draw of the quarter and allowed Gonzalez to find Megan Schillinger who combined for the Bonnies score.

52 seconds later, Hiltz returned the favor to Hollenbeck who gave Bonaventure a 9-5 lead.

The Golden Bears got one back before Hiltz completed her hat trick. Callie Kessler fed Hiltz after she picked up the ground ball on a turnover from the Bears.

Herrick made five big saves in the fourth, helping St. Bonaventure to the split in California. The win is their first on the West Coast since SBU defeated Fresno State 17-4 in 2009 and Bona's first win over a Pac-12 team.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Herrick made 11 saves with a .579 save percentage.
  • The Bonnies were a perfect 25-of-25 on clear attempts for their first perfect mark of the season.
