BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Freshman Antonio Cordeiro delivered four hits and a three-run homer while senior Adam Rankie came up a home run shy of the cycle, but the St. Bonaventure baseball team could not hold leads in the ninth and 10th innings as Binghamton rallied for an 8-7 win in extras.
The teams went back-and-forth through the first five innings when Cordeiro's first collegiate round-tripper, a no-doubt blast to right center, erased a 3-2 Bearcats lead and put the Bonnies ahead, 5-3, after six.
Binghamton (5-9) tied the game in the seventh on two-run scoring singles to send the game to the ninth in a 5-5 deadlock.
From there, miscues loomed large for both sides.
First, a Binghamton error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed the Bonnies to push in the leading run.
In the last of the ninth, though, four walks allowed the Bearcats to tie it and send the game to an extra frame.
David Marshall Jr. plated Cordeiro with a hit up the middle for a 7-6 Bona's lead.
In the home half of the inning, though, three Bonaventure errors opened the door for two unearned runs as last year's America East batting champ Tommy Reifler singled home the winning run with a smash through the right side with two outs.
The Bonnies collected 13 hits in all: Jack Putney had two hits and an RBI as well. Jackson DeJohn singled for his 100th career hit early in the game.
Gabe Watts started and allowed two runs with no walks and two strikeouts in four innings.
St. Bonaventure returns to action this weekend with a four-game series at Mount St. Mary's.
