Baseball Plays Long Ball in Win at Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, MD – St. Bonaventure played long ball to get past Mount St. Mary's in the opener of a four-game series, 7-6, Friday afternoon.

Antonio Cordeiro blasted his second homer in as many games while Adam Rankie cracked his first round-tripper of the season.

Rankie continued his hot start to the year as he keyed the offense with four RBIs, the highest total of his Division I career.

St. Bonaventure (5-10) led early as leadoff man Paul Vossen created a run by singling to start the game, stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch. Rankie brought him home on a ground out for the 1-0 start.

The Mount scored once in the second and twice in the third for a 3-1 lead.

In the Bona fourth, Rankie doubled with one out to set the table for Corderio who had hit his first collegiate homer at Binghamton Tuesday. The freshman catcher made it two bombs in two games as he tied the game up with one swing and a long ball to right.

It remained a 3-3 contest until the seventh when Rankie put the Bonnies ahead for good.

Jackson DeJohn walked to start the rally, followed by a Morgan Little single. An out later, Kyle Caccamise had the go-ahead double down the left field line for the 4-3 edge.

Then, with two outs, Rankie drove one out to right for a three-run shot and a 7-3 cushion.

The Bonnies would need all of that offense as The Mount plated two on a homer of their own in the home half of the inning, then got within one on a wild pitch in the eighth.

With the potential tying run standing at second base, Bonnies reliever Tristan Ciampa got a strikeout looking to end the threat.

Ciampa worked a perfect ninth to close the door.

Sophomore Bobby Finn earned his first career win with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs with two strikeouts. Ciampa earned the save with 2.1 innings without an earned run against him, one walk and three strikeouts. Chance Moore got the start and allowed three runs in four innings with a walk and three strikeouts.

The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
