Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, MD – The St. Bonaventure baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's, taking an extra-innings win in game two after dropping game one.
Game 1 – Mount St. Mary's 3, St. Bonaventure 1
Mount grabbed an early lead with a two-out homer to left-center off the bat of Ty Fredo.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, Mount starter Deven Sheerin was nearly untouchable.
He took a no-hitter into the seventh, but his bid for history was broken up with a leadoff homer in the last inning from
Jack Putney.
Putney's solo blast on a 3-1 pitch to center would be the only blemish against Sheerin on the day as he completed his masterpiece with two groundouts and a strikeout to end the game.
Sheerin struck out eight and walked just one, needing 88 pitches to complete the win.
Michael Salina (2-1) was tagged with a tough-luck loss after allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Game 2 – St. Bonaventure 8, Mount St. Mary's 6 (9 innings)
Bona's took game two, coming back from a two-run deficit to send the game to extra innings.
The Bonnies struck first in the second game of the afternoon.
In the second inning,
Morgan Little started with a leadoff single before
Harrison Kaufman walked and they both advanced on the sacrifice bunt from David Marshall.
Chris Hoalcraft scored Little from third on a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Mount took advantage of Bona's errors in the third to go ahead 3-1.
The Bonnies cut the deficit to one in the fifth. Vossen's lead-off single was followed by a one-base knock from
Adam Rankie. Vossen advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt from Mount before
Antonio Cordeiro's single scored him.
Bonnies starter
Kade Walker was nearly perfect in the fourth and fifth innings, walking one batter and allowing no hits in that span.
Down 4-2 in the seventh, Vossen scored on a one-out double from Rankie before Putney scored Rankie to knot the game at four.
In extras, Marshall hit one out to left-center to give Bona's a 6-4 advantage.
Mount responded with one of their own in the bottom of the inning to keep the game going.
Putney came up with one out in the top of the ninth and sent the ball sailing over the center field wall to give Bona the lead once again.
Marshall padded the Bonnies lead, scoring Cordeiro who reached on an error. SBU took an 8-6 lead to the bottom of the inning for
Noah Czajkowski.
Czajkowski (1-2) sealed the win for the Bonnies. After allowing two one-out walks, Czajkowski settled in and got the last two outs.
The two teams get back together for the series finale Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
