Dukes No Match for Bonnies; Women's Lacrosse Stays Unbeaten in A-10 Play

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Eleven different goal scorers for the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team propelled them to a historic 19-6 win over Duquesne in snowy conditions on Wednesday afternoon.

Though much of the game was played in near whiteout conditions, the wintry weather proved no trouble for the Bona offense which scored the most goals for the program in an Atlantic 10 victory since 2002.

Grace Hollenbeck led the way with four goals while Kassi Hogan added three for the Bonnies.

With the dominant win over Duquesne (6-4, 1-2 A-10), SBU improves to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play, their best start to conference play since opening 5-0 to begin the 2007 campaign.

The Bonnies (6-4, 3-0 A-10) got the offense rolling quickly, outscoring the Dukes by a 5-0 tally in the first frame.

Hollenbeck scored the first of the day for St. Bonaventure with 9:27 to go in the first. The sophomore had four goals in the contest, marking the first time in her career she has back-to-back games with a hat trick or better.

Hogan scored two in the opening quarter while classmates Abby Hiltz and Callie Kellser each added one.

Hiltz recorded the helper on Kessler's goal, making her fifth among Bonnies all-time assists leaders with 49. Hiltz surpassed Nicole Motondo, '06 who had 47 in her career.

Fiona McGovern, the Bonnies leading scorer, tallied three assists in the first quarter alone and added one more before time expired to set a new career-best.

Hollenbeck again opened the scoring in the second quarter followed by goals from Tori Nascimento and Brit Colangelo to give Bona an 8-0 lead.

Colangelo converted on a free position attempt at the 9:55 mark, scoring her first collegiate goal.

The Bonnies defense was just as strong as the offense, not allowing a Duquesne goal for the first 22-plus minutes of game time.

St. Bonaventure caused nine turnovers in the first half and was just as pesky in the second, causing seven more for a season-high 16. Hogan caused six herself to match the SBU record for most in a single game. Colangelo followed with five while Oliva Peeler had two.

Sophomores Megan Schillinger and Brooke Piper added two more to the Bona's halftime total as they went into the break with a 10-3 lead.

Rylee Gonzalez scored her first of the day, scooping up a groundball in front of cage and twirling to make the Bonaventure lead 11-4.

Hogan got her third of the day on the helper from Nascimento before McGovern scored her first on a free position opportunity.

The Bonnies took a 13-6 advantage into the final frame where they outscored the Dukes 6-0.

The first goal of the quarter once again came from Hollenbeck on a feed from Piper. Piper's assist was the 10thof the day for St. Bonaventure and their most assists in a game since they had 12 at Kent State in 2019.

Kessler and her second of the game with 8:28 remaining, plenty of time for Bona's to tack on four more.

McGovern and Jessica Notaro went back-to-back on free position shots extending the Bona lead out to 11.  Gonzalez rolled one past the Dukes goalie before Hollenbeck netted her fourth with 59 seconds left on the clock.
