Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Atlantic 10 Setback at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the Atlantic 10 campaign at the hands of Massachusetts Saturday. The Bonnies fell, 21-5, on a rainy afternoon in Amherst, Mass.

SBU had five different goal scorers on the day and seven players record a point.

Bona (6-5, 3-1 A-10) got off to a quick start with Megan Schillinger winning the opening draw and feeding Brooke Piper for a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game.

However, the Minutewomen (5-4, 4-0 A-10) responded handily, scoring the next 11 in a row to close the opening half.

In the first two quarters, the Bonnies got six looks on goal, including two free position opportunities, but couldn't convert after their early lead.

The UMass offense continued their attack, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter.

Bona's finally responded with 7:25 left in the period as Schillinger converted on a free position opportunity.

As time winded down in the third, Fiona McGovern found a cutting Tori Nascimento for the Bonnies third goal of the contest.

Down 17-3 after 45 minutes of play, the Bonnies put the press on the Minutewomen in to start the final quarter. Grace Hollenbeck caused a UMass turnover, creating a two-on-one opportunity for SBU. Rylee Gonzalez took the pass from Hollenbeck and found twine for the seventh time this season.

Jessica Notaro entered in the final quarter and scored in her fifth consecutive game with five minutes remaining.

The Bonnies caused six Minutewomen turnovers in the contest and stayed below their season average in turnovers with 13.
