MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Another dominant pitching performance from sophomore Michael Salina and timely hitting throughout the lineup paved the way for a 12-2 win in seven innings Saturday for the St. Bonaventure baseball team at Middle Tennessee.
Delayed two hours by rain that would lead to the cancelation of the originally scheduled second game of a slated twinbill, the Bonnies fell behind after two first inning runs from the Blue Raiders.
From there, however, Salina settled in and was on cruise control by the late innings as the right-hander followed up his complete game shutout at Presbyterian last weekend with five consecutive scoreless frames at MTSU after the first inning trouble.
After MTSU (7-7) had three hits in the first, the Blue Raiders tallied only three more hits the rest of the way. Salina finished with six strikeouts and did not walk a batter on the day.
Bona's bats came alive in the third as they scored four times on four hits. A run-scoring groundout from Adam Rankie got the Bonnies on the board and they would do the rest of their damage with two outs: Antonio Cordeiro doubled home the tying run, then Jackson DeJohn pushed the Bonnies in front with another two-run double of his own.
The visitors doubled their lead in the fifth, first taking advantage of back-to-back MTSU errors to score two more runs before Paul Vossen and Ranke followed with run-scoring singles and an 8-2 cushion.
SBU (4-8) played tack-on in the sixth and seventh – DeJohn registered his third RBI of the day while Cordeiro and Jack Putney brought home runs as well.
That allowed the Bonnies to put the run rule into effect as Tristan Ciampa closed out the Blue Raiders with a scoreless seventh inning of relief.
Rankie and DeJohn each had three hits while Cordeiro, Vossen and Kyle Caccamise all had two. Vossen and Caccamise both added stolen bases as well.
The two teams will finish what is now a three-game series with a rubber match Sunday at noon Central/1:00 p.m. Eastern.
