CLEVELAND – St. Bonaventure controlled much of the first half and led in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome a late rally from Cleveland State as the Vikings came away with a 10-8 victory Saturday afternoon inside the Krenzler Bubble.
Freshman Patrick Shanahan delivered a hat trick and four points to lead Bonaventure.
Things started swimmingly for the Bonnies as they owned a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Shanahan, Jake Rosa and Benny Carter all scored during the first quarter and when Shanahan converted his second of the day at the first quarter buzzer, the Bonnies were in command.
That control extended early in the second as Jake Kucinski found the twine for a 5-1 advantage 41 seconds into the period.
Cleveland State (3-3) slowed the Bona momentum with a goal for a 5-2 score, but the Bonnies seemed to put things back in their hands following a Kellen Pulera goal from a Mark Belles feed with 7:22 left in the half.
CSU scored the last two goals of the first half, however, to send things to intermission with a 6-4 Bona edge.
Shanahan completed his hat trick for a 7-5 score with 9:40 remaining in the third, but CSU finally tied things up, 7-7, with 8:49 to play.
Kyle Pepper put the Bonnies back in front as he scored with 7:06 showing on the clock.
Cole Pollard tied it again as he scored with 4:56 left and with 3:11 to go, the Vikings got what would be the game-winning goal on the man-up from Michael Care. The hosts put it on ice with another power play tally with 21 ticks left.
Cristofero Cucciuffo made seven saves for the Bonnies (0-5).
St. Bonaventure returns home to host rival Canisius in an anticipated Western New York matchup Tuesday afternoon. Faceoff at the Marra Athletics Complex is set for 4 p.m.
