ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Five Bonnies picked up multiple hits and junior Luke Roggenburk locked down the lead out of the bullpen as St. Bonaventure sealed a series win over VCU, 11-6, Sunday afternoon inside Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field.
A five-run second gave the Bonnies control early in the rubber match of the three-game Atlantic 10 series.
Chris Hoalcraft started the scoring with an RBI hit up the middle and Adam Rankie later singled home another with a smash through the right side. Jack Putney singled in another and a fielder's choice as well as a wild pitch brought home two other tallies for a 5-0 Bona lead.
VCU got three of those runs back right away in the third to get within 5-3.
The Bonnies got important insurance in the fourth on RBI hits from both Putney and Morgan Little.
The Rams continued to attempt to claw back in the game with two in the fifth, but Roggenburk came on in relief and stranded two runners on base to put out the fire.
In the sixth, VCU had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded and no outs. Roggenburk responded with three consecutive strikeouts, however, to end the best opportunity for the Rams to tie or take the lead.
Hoalcraft brought in a run in the seventh with his second run-scoring hit of the day and Morgan Little added the exclamation mark with a no-doubt two-run homer to right in the eighth. An RBI double by David Marshall Jr. completed the scoring.
Roggenburk (2-0) had one of his best career outings, keeping the Rams off balance with a snapping curveball and fastball sharing over 20 mph of difference in speed. He struck out a career-high nine batters and issued no walks, scattering five hits and a run in the ninth.
Little paced the offense with three hits and three RBIs while Putney, Marshall, Hoalcraft, Kyle Caccamise and Paul Vossen all had two hits apiece.
Bobby Finn started an A-10 game for the first time in his career, working 4.1 innings of five-run ball with three strikeouts for the Bonnies (12-18, 3-6 A-10).
Brandon Eike had three hits for VCU (23-13, 6-3).
The Bonnies next travel to play at Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon.
