ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team made early offense stick and held on late to score a 5-2 win over Richmond on a rainy afternoon at Handler Park Saturday afternoon.
Jayce Tharnish led off the Bona first with an infield single and Jack Putney would bring in the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle. Later in the inning, a hit batter with the bases loaded forced home another run for a 2-0 SBU lead.
The Bonnies added three in the third to take control.
Morgan Little cracked a no-doubt solo home run to right to stretch the advantage to three. Then, after a single from Jackson DeJohn, David Marshall Jr. played long ball again with a two-run blast to right for a 5-0 advantage.
Bonnies pitching would make the lead stand up, holding the Spiders off the scoreboard for the first eight frames.
Noah Czjakowski (3-4) tossed five scoreless innings, scattering four hits with four strikeouts to earn the win. Bobby Finn (3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) followed that up with three scoreless frames before running into trouble in the ninth. Â
Richmond picked up two runs on two hits in the last inning, but Tristan Ciampa coaxed a fly out and a strikeout to end the threat and lock in his third save.
Eight Bonnies accounted for 11 hits on the day with Little, DeJohn and Marshall collecting two apiece. Marshall led the way with three RBIs while Adam Rankie extended his hitting streak to 21 straight games with an infield hit in the second.
With the win, the Bonnies even the series and move to 15-22 on the year and 5-9 in A-10 play while Richmond falls to 19-24, 8-6.
The teams meet up for the rubber game Sunday at 11 a.m.
