ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Richmond played long ball to score the series win by taking the rubber game of a three-game Atlantic 10 series vs. the St. Bonaventure baseball team Sunday at Handler Park, 8-4.
Richmond cracked three homers – two off the bat of Aidan O'Keefe following the first of the day from Connor Larson to account for seven of their eight tallies.
The Bonnies (15-23, 5-10 A-10) scored first following a double flared down the left field line off the bat of Antonio Cordeiro which scored Adam Rankie in the opening inning. Rankie singled with one out to extend his hitting streak to 22 consecutive games.
Larson changed the complexion of the game with a two-out, three-run homer that just cleared the fence in right for a 3-1 lead after two.
Bona got one back in the fourth following a run-scoring double from Chris Hoalcraft to get within 3-2.
O'Keefe broke the game open in the fifth, however, with another three-run homer, this time to left center.
St. Bonaventure tried clawing back with a run in the fifth set up by Jayce Tharnish – a bunt single followed by a stolen base set him up to later score on a wild pitch – and a tally in the sixth on a pinch hit RBI knock from Robert Mannino.
O'Keefe's second homer of the day came in the seventh and halted Bona's momentum, stretching the lead back to three and the Spiders never looked back.
Chase Toploski (1-0) earned the win as he came on in relief and helped end a Bonaventure rally effort. He recorded four outs and did not allow a run. Cole Hentschel got his sixth save with 1.2 innings of scoreless work to finish the game.
O'Keefe went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead Richmond (20-24, 9-6).
Kade Walker started and struck out five in 2.1 innings on the hill for the Bonnies. Tristan Ciampa tossed the final four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Hoalcraft and David Marshall each had two hits for the Bonnies.
SBU is back in action with a midweek rivalry game vs. Niagara Tuesday at Handler Park. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
