LEWISTON, N.Y. – Niagara set the tone with a big first inning and never looked back on the way to an 8-1 win over the St. Bonaventure baseball team in non-conference action Tuesday.
Bona loaded the bases in the first and pushed across a run following a walk to Ryan Davis with a Bonnie at every base, but the Purple Eagles escaped any further damage.
Niagara capitalized on its bases loaded opportunity in the home half of the inning as Jason Green ripped a 1-2 pitch to the fence in left center to plate three for a 4-1 lead.
The Purple Eagles, leaders in the MAAC this season, added a run in each the second, fourth and sixth innings to create further distance.
Harrison Kaufman registered three singles while Davis had two for the Bonnies to combine for five of the team's six hits. Jayce Tharnish also recorded a double.
Gabe Watts started on the hill for SBU (4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) and was followed by Chance Moore (3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) and Cam Demos (1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K).
Green powered the Purple Eagles with four RBIs while Nick Groves and Eric Rataczak both drove in two runs.
St. Bonaventure will travel to play at UMass in a return to Atlantic 10 action this weekend beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
