Billikens Prove Too Much For Bonnies

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped a three-game Atlantic 10 series to Saint Louis Saturday and Sunday at Joyce Field.

The Bonnies and Billikens battled in extra innings in game one, but the Brown and White fell, 2-1, in nine. SLU captured a doubleheader sweep Sunday, taking game one, 10-2, followed by a 12-4 decision in game two.

Game 1 – Saint Louis 2, St. Bonaventure 1 (9 inn.)
The Billikens pulled ahead early on in the contest when Jocelyn Abbott singled home Abby Mallo from third.

It became a pitcher's duel until the fifth when the Bonnies were able to breakthrough on the scoreboard.

Down 0-2 in the count, Kennedy Haberl turned on a pitch and belted her first home run of the year down the left field line, tying the game.

Saint Louis was able to advance runners to second and third with only one out in the top of the seventh, but freshman Kendall Stull earned back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

The game would head to extra innings tied, 1-1.

In the top of the ninth, the Billikens scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly off the bat off Abbott, taking a 2-1 lead.

Saint Louis starter Taylor Hochman shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, earning the win for the visitors.

Stull tossed a career-high 8.2 innings for the Brown and White, fanning a career-best six and scattering just six hits.

Game 2 – Saint Louis 10, St. Bonaventure 2
The Billikens were able to strike first in the top of the first, scoring the game's first run on a passed ball.

The Bonnies, however, took the lead in the bottom half of the first, scoring their first run on a throwing error by the catcher and taking the lead on an RBI groundout from Stull.

Saint Louis was quick to respond as it plated three runs in the top of the second on a single and a fielder's choice, retaking the lead, 4-2.

SLU extended their lead to three in the top of the third with a solo home run off the bat of Kelsey Etling before adding three more insurance runs in the top of the fourth.

The Billikens put the game out of reach for good in the top of the fifth with a two-run single from Cami Newbanks, sealing the victory for Saint Louis.

Game 3 – Saint Louis 12, St. Bonaventure 4
Ahead 1-0 in the top of the third, the Billikens' offense erupted for five runs powered by a three-run double from Etling, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead.

The Bonnies pulled a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the third with an Olivia Moon RBI double and an RBI groundout from Grace Walker.

In the top of the fifth, the Billikens struck for six runs to take a commanding 12-2 lead.

The Bonnies looked to rally in the bottom of the fifth as Olivia Whitecar drove in a run on a groundout while Moon doubled home Kymora Wang, but it was not enough as Saint Louis recorded the final out to earn the sweep.

The Bonnies are back in action Tuesday, April 9 when they travel to take on Binghamton in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
