ST. BONAVENTURE vs. FORDHAM
Thursday - Saturday, May 16-18
Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field
TV: ESPN+
LEADING OFF
- The St. Bonaventure baseball team finishes up the 2024 season by welcoming Fordham to Handler Park as part of senior weekend.
- SBU looks to snap a nine-game losing streak that has put a bit of a halt on what was becoming a true turnaround season for the Bonnies. The Bonnies stood at 15-22 and 5-9 in A-10 play after beating Richmond on April 27, heading into the rubber game of a three-game series with the Spiders before the current losing streak started. Still, the numbers for the Bonnies are much better across the board this year - a win this week would give Bona double its win total from a year ago. Bona's team batting average is up 26 points over 2023 (.276 vs. .250) while the team ERA is down over two full runs (7.43 vs. 9.97). Bona is averaging almost two more runs per game vs. last year and its walks allowed per nine is down from 6.4 last year to 5.0 this year. Bona's team strikeouts are way down as well - the club has struck out 320 times on the year with only Saint Louis (317) and George Mason (298) posting fewer strikeouts.
- Fordham (19-30, 10-11 A-10) is a game out of the final spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Currently, the Rams are chasing Saint Joseph's and Massachusetts, who are tied for the sixth and seventh positions at 11-10, along with George Washington and Richmond tied for fourth and fifth at 12-9.
- Following Saturday's finale, the Bonnies will honor their nine graduating seniors with a last lap around the Handler Park bases, keeping with a longstanding program tradition.
RANKIE IN THE RECORD BOOKS
- Adam Rankie had a 23-game hitting streak snapped in the first game of the May 3 doubleheader at UMass. His 23-game hitting streak stands as the second-longest in Bonnies program history and the longest hit streak for a Bonnies player since Mike Nayman's 26-game streak during the 1988 season. In his two seasons at SBU, Rankie has hit streaks of 16, 17 and 23 games. Entering this weekend, he has at least one hit in 75 of his 92 career Division I games.
- The longest hitting streak by any Atlantic 10 player this year, Rankie's 23-game stretch of hitting lasted from March 16 until May 3. He collected 39 hits during the streak, hitting .379 with a .436 on-base percentage, eight doubles, two home runs and 21 RBIs.
- With 65 hits on the season, Rankie has the most hits by a Bonnie since Thad Johnson's 67 in 2015 while currently being tied for 10th all-time for SBU hits in a season along with Jason Radwan who had 65 hits in 2012.
- Rankie has hit both lefties and righties very well, hitting .341 vs. RHP and .302 vs. southpaws.
SITUATIONAL STARS
David Marshall Jr. is hitting a team-best .392 among regulars with runners in scoring position this season (20-51).
Robert Mannino has the best overall average with RISP on the team at .406 (13-32).
RACKING UP STATS
Adam Rankie leads the Bonnies this season in multi-hit games with 20. Since 1995, the most multi-hit games in a season by a Bonnies player is 24 by both Jesse Bosnik (2010) and Randy Moley (2008).
CAPITALIZING ON PLAYING TIME
Sophomore
Jayce Tharnish has played an important role for the Bonnies as of late, taking over centerfield duties following a season-ending injury to
Paul Vossen. Tharnish, who missed a month due to injury himself, is seeing his first Atlantic 10 action and shining – he's hit .308 with a .386 on-base percentage in 10 A-10 starts thus far.
WHO'S HOT
- Robert Mannino is hitting a team-high .368 in Atlantic 10 games (14-38), including 13 total games and nine starts. He also has a .429 on-base percentage in A-10 contests.
- Harrison Kaufman has gone 10-for-20 at the plate in his last six starts including a grand slam at UMass and a two-run homer Tuesday vs. Niagara. He's slashing .500/.565/.800 in that span.
- David Marshall has hit .324 in the last 10 games, best among Bonnies who have played in each of those contests.
- Bobby Finn has a 2.53 ERA with 13 strikeouts over his last 10.2 innings of work, holding opponents to a .205 batting average. Finn currently averages 10 strikeouts per nine innings which would be good for seventh in Bonnies single season history.
- Michael Salina had a career-high 10 strikeouts last time out at Davidson, the most strikeouts in a game by a Bonnies pitcher this season. His 10.29 Ks/9 would be good for fifth in school history for a season and the best since Billy Urban's 10.23 in 2013.
- Salina's 61 strikeouts on the year rank 15th in Bonnies single season history.
- Freshman Alex Barger has a 2.57 ERA in six Atlantic 10 appearances, holding opponents to a .167 batting average across 7.0 innings of A-10 work.
