ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.—The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team fought regional rival Binghamton to a 1-1 draw in its home opener Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
In the early going, St. Bonaventure and Binghamton swapped possession in their respective ends.
Mahelie Barbeau got what seemed to be an open look at net for St. Bonaventure in the opening minutes, but was ruled offsides.
In the 28
th minute, sophomore
Lilly Ma netted her first collegiate goal and the lone tally for the Bonnies. Barbeau found Ma making a run into the box where she beat the goalkeeper sending her shot to the far corner.
St. Bonaventure (0-3-1, 0-0 A-10) took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. The Bearcats had a slight edge in shots after 45 minutes of play, leading 4-3.
Jael Schubert posted a clean opening half, making three saves.
After the break, the teams battled for control with Binghamton landing the first shot of the second half in the 52
nd minute.
Binghamton (1-1-1, 0-0 America East) remained in control to begin the second stanza, evening the score at one in the 65
th minute as Hannah Mimas snuck a high shot under the crossbar and into the net.
The Bonnies quickly tried to regain the lead, charging into the offensive end. Freshman
Torrie Grant-Clavijo took aim at goal but was blocked by a Bearcat defender.
A back-and-forth for possession in the final 25 minutes led to the 1-1 draw between the Southern Tier foes.
St. Bonaventure finished with four shots and four saves.
The Bonnies return to action Sunday, Sept. 1 for another rivalry matchup at Niagara.
