ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team scored their first win of the season over Youngstown State Thursday evening under the lights of the Marra Athletics Complex. The 2-0 victory is St. Bonaventure's first shutout win since October 2022 when the Bonnies downed Richmond 1-0 at home.
The Bonnies controlled possession in the opening minutes of the game with
Maya Marolly landing a shot on goal in the second minute of play.
In the 15
th minute, St. Bonaventure found its opening with
Evie Underhill collecting a long pass from the Bonnies defensive end and finding
Thea Juul streaking toward the net. Juul received the pass from Underhill inside the box and sent home a well-placed shot past the Penguins keeper.
St. Bonaventure (1-4-1) remained in control during the opening stanza, ripping off three more shots before the intermission.
The Bonnies dominated the pace of play in the first half, despite holding a slight edge in shots before intermission, tallying five to the Penguins' four. Starting Bona goalkeeper
Jael Schubert recorded two saves in the first 45 minutes as well.
Opening the second half, senior
Chiara Gottinger entered in net for the Bonnies. Gottinger has been out for the first five games of the season with injury but put up a clean 45 minutes for the Bonnies in her season debut.
Gottinger was tested early in her debut, making an outstanding stop in the 50
th minute for SBU to maintain the one goal lead.
In the 56
th minute, Juul took her second look at goal for the night, but sent her shot wide left.
Freshman
Torrie Grant-Clavijo came in with fresh legs in the 60
th minute and found a way to quickly put the pressure on the YSU defense. Grant-Clavijo beat out her defender in the 70
th minute, finding an opening inside the box, but her chance was saved by the YSU goalie.
Three minutes later, Marolly found herself without a mark just outside the 18-yard box and ripped a high-flying shot into the top-left corner over the fingers of the YSU keeper. The goal is the first of the freshman's young career.
Alessia Donia was credited with the helper on the 74
th minute goal, her second of the year.
Gottinger finished with two saves on the night as the Bonnies led in shots on goal 8-4.
QUOTES FROM COACH GEORGE
"I'm so proud of this group and my staff. We have faced so many challenges and fought so hard. Tonight, I thought we dominated in spaces that hurt the opposition. The players were purposeful in their possession and were able to create real chances in our attacking third."
"Defensively we were first to everything and competed well in our individual battles. We wanted to limit YSU when they had the ball and I thought we were able to control them in transitional moments."
"This team is fun to coach and fun to watch and I look forward to our journey the rest of the season. Thank you to the fans for the support and love tonight. It absolutely inspired the players and we look forward to more nights under the lights at the Marra Athletics Complex."
