ANNAPOLIS, MD – The St. Bonaventure University women's tennis team began the fall season at the Navy Invitational.
"It was a great first tournament of the year," Bonnies head coach Mike Bates said. "We got a lot of competition out of this weekend and know what we must work on for the next few weeks. It was great to have a few players playing on Sunday."
In doubles action, the team of Tamara Bachmann and Isabella Venter advanced to Sunday's A flight final. The duo defeated Cenan Liu and Lauren Splett from George Mason, 6-4, in the first round before taking down Alena Kubanova and Namie Isago from Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-5, in the second round.
Bachmann and Venter battled Addison Felts and Natalie Kim from Mary Washington in the semifinals, winning 6-4 to advance to the finals against Olivia Fermo and Emily Tannenbaum from Navy.
The duo fell in the finals, 6-0, to Fermo and Tannenbaum.
The team of Sienna Smith and Abbie Tyler picked up a first round win in the B doubles flight, defeating Olivia Geoghegan and Evelyn Snyder from Mary Washington, 6-1, but fell in the second round.
In singles play, Smith and Kashish Bote bounced back from first round losses to advance to the consolation final in their respective flights.
In the D flight, Bote took down Binghamton's Kayla Castellano, 6-2, 6-1, and followed that with a, 6-1, 6-2 win over Snyder from Mary Washington.
Bote captured a win in the D consolation final over Audrey Wijono from Johns Hophins in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2
Smith, playing in the C flight, defeated Linda Dimitroff from Mary Washington, 6-0, 6-1 and Monmouth's Ximena Cano, 6-2, 6-1, to make her way to the final. Smith, however, fell in the C consolation final to Jay Xiao from Navy, 6-4, 7-6.
Venter, Bachmann and Tyler also picked up a win in singles for the Brown and White.
The Bonnies are back in action Sunday, Sept. 22 when they travel to compete in the UB Invitational.
