Minutewomen Outlast Bonnies, 67-58

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Massachusetts, 67-58, Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center.

Dani Haskell led all scorers with 29 points, matching her career-high in scoring. Haskell finished the game shooting 8-for-17 from the floor, including five threes. Zoe Shaw also finished in double figures for the Brown and White, tallying 13 points.

The Bonnies struggled to get the offense going in the first quarter, shooting just 25.0 percent (2-for-8) from the field as the Minutewomen (8-8, 3-2 A-10) opened a 21-9 advantage as the first period ended.

Bona's trailed 23-13 early in the second, but used a 7-0 run capped off by a Haskell basket and free throw, making it a three-point game with 5:58 remaining in the half.

UMass responded with an 11-3 run to end the half, taking a 34-23 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Minutewomen pushed their lead to 13 after five straight points from Stefanie Kulesza with 7:58 showing on the clock.

Trailing 46-34 late in the third, the Bonnies (5-11, 1-4 A-10) were not going down without a fight, rattling off 10 unanswered points to cut the deficit back to four, 46-42.

The visitors, however, answered with a 6-0 run of their own, pushing the lead back to 10, 52-42.

Haskell opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to make it a 55-48 game, but that is as close as the Bonnies would get as UMass pushed its lead to as many as 16 in the final period.

Megan Olbrys led the Minutewomen with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the game shooting 38.0 percent (19-for-50) from the floor and Massachusetts shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the field.
  • The Minutewomen outrebounded the Bonnies, 40-26.
  • Bona's held the Minutewomen to just 1-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY
"It was a bad first quarter, giving up offensive rebounds and turnovers. Those are pretty consistent themes for us right now and we have got to find a way to change that."

"Give our kids credit. When we did settle in, I thought we made some good runs and gave ourselves a chance. We cut it to five or six and forced the timeout. They went to Olbrys and were able to get things going offensively."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies head back out on the road to take on Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Richmond Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Robins Center.
