Frost Posts First Career Double-Double; Bonnies Fall to George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman Caitlin Frost registered a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double but it was not enough as the St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team to George Mason, 83-63, Sunday afternoon at EagleBank Arena.

Frost finished the contest 7-for-13 from the field in 31 minutes. Zoe Shaw tallied 12 points for the Bonnies while Mackenzie Pettinelli chipped in 11 and Dani Haskell added 10.

Shaw's second three of the first period gave the Bonnies an early 10-6 lead Sunday afternoon.

George Mason (12-2, 2-1 A-10) was able to get back into the game with a 10-0 spurt, taking a 16-10 advantage early on.

Mackenzie Pettinelli's basket with 51 seconds left in the first pulled the Bonnies back within six, 22-16, but a 5-0 Patriots run to end the quarter pushed their lead to 11, 27-16.

In the second, Frost cut the deficit back to single digits, 29-20.

The Patriots, however, outscored the Bonnies (4-10, 0-3 A-10) 19-9 over the final seven minutes of the period, taking a 48-29 lead into halftime.

The two teams traded baskets in the third period as the Bonnies looked to cut into the deficit.

Pettinelli capped off the third quarter with a three that pulled the Bonnies within 16, heading to the final period.

A 9-0 run from the hosts in the fourth quarter gave the Patriots their biggest lead of the game, 74-51.

The lead was too much for the Bonnies to overcome as George Mason earned the Atlantic 10 victory.

Paula Suarez posted a game-high 22 points for George Mason.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the game shooting 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the field while George Mason shot 42.5 percent (34-for-80) from the floor.

  • Frost's 17 points marked a new career-high for the Bonnies freshman.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY
"We talked a lot about continuing to fight and playing the right way, so I thought we improved on that. We just had a lot of breakdowns defensively. Give credit to George Mason. They are a good team and put a lot of pressure on you."

"I thought we played pretty well in the that third quarter and then early in the quarter we stopped moving the ball with the pass, we were dribbling too much and that led to tired shots which allowed them to breakout for easy layups. Credit to our kids though. It looked like it could have really gotten out of hand there but they did a good job of not letting that happen."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies return home to host Saint Louis Wednesday, Jan. 8. Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
