Women's Soccer Closes Out Season With 2-1 Loss At Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team closed out its season on Sunday afternoon on the road at Richmond, falling 2-1 after struggling to capitalize on late game opportunities.

A 1-0 Richmond advantage stood for nearly an hour of game time after Emma Newman scored in the 17th minute, collecting a well-placed through ball and firing into the back of the net.

The Spiders (4-7-7, 1-5-4 A-10) were then able to control the game's pace and play with patience, though the Bonnies (3-13-2, 0-10 A-10) did well fending off the hosts' many chances throughout the scoreless stretch.

Richmond snapped the streak well after halftime in the 73rd minute, willing in a score through multiple SBU defenders as chaos ensued following a corner kick. The Spiders got another chance soon after as junior Naomi Sharma Tobar was called for a foul in the box, but to the home fans' dismay, Kingsley Hughes put the resulting penalty kick off-target.

The penalty kick scare seemingly sent a shock through the Bonaventure lineup as the team came alive in the final 10 minutes, though the visitors were unable able to find the net on several respectable opportunities. Shortly following the booking, sophomore Ekemini Udofa found open space on a run down the field and fired from deep, narrowly missing the opposite corner of the goal.

Five minutes later, graduate student Daniela De Souza sent a shot from the middle of the box after receiving a feed from the wide side of the field, though her attempt smacked off the left post for a narrow miss.

Graduate student Giovanna Coghetto was fouled in the box just seconds later after an aggressive slide tackle.

Coghetto netted the penalty kick to bring the margin back to one, but Bona's previous missed opportunities proved consequential as Richmond was able to burn the remaining clock and seal the result.

Coghetto's goal was her sixth of the season, solidifying her as the team leader for the year. Junior goalkeeper Juliana Castellano made her ninth start of the season and played full time, making nine saves.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MELISSA SHERWOOD
"Close but no cigar. I have to give the team credit for always keeping going and maintaining their belief and team spirit in every moment this season, no mater how tough."
