Rams Power Past Bonnies, 2-0

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team dropped a home game to Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon, 2-0.

The Rams (2-6-3, 1-1-1 A-10) struck first in the 57th minute when Kyler Vojvodic for Rhode Island made a move to dribble into the box and laid the ball off to Everson Goglia who was unmarked in the box and tapped the pass into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Rams.

The Bonnies' (3-6-2, 1-2-1 A-10) first chance of the contest came in the 10th minute.

Senior Dean Mercer placed a corner kick into the middle of the box; however, no Bona teammates were there to receive the pass and the Rhode Island goalkeeper punched it out to avoid harm.

Rhode Island made efforts to be the first team to strike first on the scoreboard, but stout defending from junior Hugo Berville and the rest of the Bona's backline kept the score tied 0-0 through the first 20 minutes.

In the 24th minute, a misplay from goalkeeper Felix Schone found a Rams defender with the ball at the edge of the box. Junior Callum Shillington tried to save the chance from the Rams, however, his efforts resulted in a foul in a dangerous spot right outside the penalty area.

The Brown and White's defense came up big again with the wall blocking any serious threat and keeping the score tied.

Another chance for the Bonnies in the 30th minute. An attack by graduate student Seth Hammond saw him fouled right outside the top of the penalty area. Hammond lined it up to take a shot, but his shot soared high of the goal.

Felix Schöne showcased his reflexes in the 33rd minute, making a save that likely had the Rams thinking they were going to be the first team on the scoreboard. Schöne batted the shot away and it deflected off the post to keep the game scoreless.

In the 56th minute, the Bonnies drew the Rams goalkeeper off his line and the ball found Shillington in the middle of the box. Shillington put a shot on target that saw the Rams defense save it off the line. However, the save came right back to Shillington who shot it a second time but his shot deflected off the post.

The Bonnies attack continued to push for an equalizer in the later stages of the game. Freshman Benjamin Hayes tried a shot from just outside the top of the penalty area in the 74th minute but the shot fell to the hands of the Rams goalkeeper.

The pressure kept coming from the Bonnies. Shillington found himself in another opportunity to score in the 78th minute with a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper on the left side of the box. However, his shot went wide right of the target.

In the final moments of the game, Theo Harris for Rhode Island made a run to try to put the game out of reach. A defensive breakdown saw him alone with Schöne in the box and he put the ball in the back of the net to make the score 2-0 Rhode Island in the last 30 seconds of the game.

The Bonnies ultimately could not break through with a moment to find a goal and the final whistle sounded with the scoreboard reading 2-0 Rhode Island.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"We were miles off it today. We need to look at ourselves and there are too many guys looking for someone else to solve their problems on the day instead of us being able to solve them internally. Need to get a few guys healthy get some guys recovery. We will look at film to teach us some hard truths and see what we can do Tuesday."
