ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week presented by CPL are men's cross country redshirt senior Clay Peets and golf senior Gabe Williams.
Peets turned heads in the cross country world by trouncing the field in the Blue Race of the Louisville Cross Country Classic this past Saturday. He pulled away from the rest of the field of over 425 competitors, setting yet another school record in the process.
He ran the 8K course at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in a Bonnies record time of 24:12.2, beating the competition by over 36 seconds. Only four other runners broke the 25-minute barrier on a summer-like day in the Bluegrass State.
A native of Akron, Ohio, Peets has won two meets this season and finished second in another. He was key to the Bonnies finishing third in the team standings out of 41 squads.
Williams put together a sparkling round of 5-under 67 on Monday in the final round of the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate in Apalachin, N.Y., just one off his career best set in last year's Murray Cup.
The fourth-year Bonnie finished Sunday's opening round with an eagle on the par-5 18th and continued the momentum into Monday. He started the final stanza with a birdie on the par-4 first and drained four more birdies to go out in 31. He was 6-under for the day until the 16th when back-to-back bogeys become the only blemishes on his score card, but he rebounded by making birdie on the last to place third on the leaderboard out of 84 players.
The Deansboro, N.Y. native helped lead the Bonnies to a third-place finish out of 13 teams as he combined his final round 67 with an opening 18 of 72 for a 139 total, four shots off medalist Sahir Balyan of Iona. Binghamton's Brandon Conner was second at 137.
